going to the dogs!!!

I hate that phrase

No its not!

No denying, it isn't a time of plenty. And some people are really struggling

But, compared with what? 90% of the rest of the world, most of us here are alright

YANBU. The national sport of doom and gloom grumbling does no-one any favours. If lack of consumer confidence is keeping the recession lively, a bit of optimism and 'can-do' attitude is long overdue.

suppose it depends where you live. I have a nice comfortable life in a nice place but many are very far removed from that.

Well I think it is in many ways. The scum of the earth are procreating in their masses, whereas the naice people are choosing to have less children. So fast forward a bit and I'm only glad that I won't be around to live through the chaos. Crime and punishment is in total disarray. Our penal system is an absolute joke. That said, whenever I'm out and about, I typically see good people who are polite, courteous, who say thank you and hold doors open etc etc, so it's not all bad.

YANBU, that's DH's favourite phrase. It sends me nuts.

Every time it sends him into a rant about wanting to emigrate, which sends me into a mega rant about how most places are worse off.

We personally have hardly been touched by recession, but he will get in a right mood about every cut/price rise/inefficiency. To which I tell him that if he's so concerned he should help run a community group/school governors/charity/committee ie get involved. He's got no interest in doing any of these things, in fact mostly he doesn't even vote, but thinks that moaning continuously is clearly a good course of action.

Most people's experience of life abroad is a couple of weeks on a beach somewhere in the med. Most have never ventured further and seen how life is for others.

Sure life has gotten tougher over the last few years. Like many I've not had a sniff of a payrise in over 4 years. Our bills have shot up, especially our food bill.

But my job often takes me to other countries and I see first hand how fast developing countries are growing, how much harder people are working for much less pay and see how some others are struggling. In comparison we have nothing to moan about.

I agree, but I do so wish that people in this country had more of a 'can-do' attitude than the relentless 'can't-do-anything' attitude that is so prevalent. As a country I think that we are our own worst enemy.

What's wrong with dogs? (as long as you pick up their poo and don't let them park in disabled spaces)

sinister that is precisely my response...

WHAT does that even MEAN????

Niceguy I suppose, I've lived abroad a fair bit and impasse are African. So maybe with that perspective, its easier to see the positives

I don't think the people that say it, even know what they mean though!!!

Do you think that if the media suddenly started being all upbeat about the economy that we might start to feel more cheerful and positive and that things then might actually start to change for the better? I sometimes think we wish misery on ourselves.

I think things are tight for a lot of people. I'm pretty much on my arse, just covering bills...and it gets me down. I know people in really bad circumstances. But I still don't think that constitutes 'going to the dogs'...or necessitates emigrating! There aren't many places where things are better.

Although, that said, I am much happier in the sunshine!

We get the media we deserve. If as a nation we weren't so doom and gloomy the media would be less misery-laden. But on the other hand if we had less gleeful reporting of a possible triple dip recession and how the economy is flatlining and how we are all essentially fucked, then yes, I think we may be a bit more cheerful.

Nah, about 90% of the greyhound racing stadiums (all right, stadia!) have shut down haven't they?!

But with the Toryboys cutting benefits to vulnerable people and letting "overseas based" companies get away with paying no tax and lowering tax for millionaires it sure makes me think so sometimes.

I think, that when you have lived in an area that has had limited crime and then in the last couple of years you witness a woman being stabbed in the phone box at the end of the road, a pizza delivery guy being mugged for his motor bike, receive letters from the police about a cache of arms and ammunition found over the wall at the other end of the road, and are living a few feet from where this happened
www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/apr/18/teenager-convicted-raping-girl ,
when the area was previously a haven of elderly folk who had moved in to enjoy their retirements overlooking the park, and respectable hard-working people who had moved out of Tottenham, you do begin to wonder what is going wrong.

Things don't seem to be getting better do they?

Actually I believe it would. Recessions are essentially a collapse of confidence. Put confidence back in people and the economy will go back up. Of course you can't just magic confidence, in practice you need to create the situation where people feel confident.

Which is why this will never, ever, ever end!

we are going through difficult times for many people

but travel and get out of the nice tourist areas and you will see we have it good and go shopping you realise that things are not expensive here

plus of course free education and health care for all, a legal system that treats men and woman as equal, we are not a country controlled by corruption, women have control over their lives, women can vote so many things we take for granted that makes all our lives better

and read up about victorian britian how difficult life was for so so many

Charliefox · 08/05/2013 12:00

It's not free education and health care though, is it. Those who work and pay taxes pay for it.
