AIBU?

to think school can shove their cocking badger costume up their cocking arses, and never ever ever again provide the stupid costumes they demand?

I had a great big ranty thread last week about school sending me a letter asking me to send my 10yr old DD dressed as a badger for World Book Day.

Well. I came up with a badger costume, thanks to MN, a printed out mask, and a nasty shaggy grey fake fur thing from the hospice shop.

And then I bribed DD to wear it, as, being 10, it wasn't exactly her idea of fun.

And then the class acted out an extract from the book (Fantastic Mr Fox) that didn't even HAVE ANY FUCKING BADGERS IN IT and DD had to narrate from the sidelines instead, and the little girl from Yr 1 who had also been asked to be a badger had to sit out.

YANBU.

Have you complained?

I had never heard of WBD until last year on MN. Sounds life alas of trouble and strife to me. Our school have a book fair over the week, you get a voucher and can buy a book if you want. It is in the library so can be avoided.
Feel sorry for you and DD, what a waste of time.

I would be seriously pissed off with that too. no advice I'm afraid though other than tell the teacher how pissed off upset you are about this.

LOL.

YANBU.

Can't you write a sarcastic note for the teacher, saying what you put here (without the swearing obviously)

YANBU & I do feel sorry for your DD.

But as soon as I read 'cocking badgers' I started sniggering.

You have every right to be pissed off but you have a great way of writing wittily!

Maybe she can just be a badger for every school occasion from here on in.

That should be fun when the Nativity rolls around. She could be a Wise Badger or the Virgin Badger (accessorised with crown or halo, obv.)

Yanbu really you aren't. The wbd thing was a bloody farce at our school. The kids didn't even read any fecking books. Next day ds had to dress as a fecking roman, the shame I felt when ds went into the playground wearing a badly cut up white sheet. It became quickly apparent all the other parents had taken it much more seriously and their dc looked amazing. Last week dd had to be a Viking now next week it's Comic Relief. It's got beyond a joke tbh and I think schools ask for too much!

Why do you have to dress up in order to take an interest in books? Ds2's school never do any of this nonsense and ds2 loves books. I don't think kids are suddenly going to begin begging their parents to take them to the library or visit bookstores just because of some silly costume they've had to wear at school. Children inherit their love of books from parents mainly and also other family members. If there aint a book in the house, then no amount of dressing up or receiving a £1 book token is going to change that.

I think parents should boycott all these gimmicky dressing up days. It must be causing anguish to poorer families and people who are stressed out, bereaved, sick or otherwise occupied with important issues.

Move to Wales! All DD's school ever does is St David's Day, the costume never changes, and if you don't like dressing up you can wear a Wales rugby shirt or pin on a daff & you've done your bit Grin

Takver, that's tempting. We are only about 100 yards from Wales anyway!

I'd happily move countries to get away from fancy dress tyranny.

That's alright for the boys Takver but think of the girls. I still bear the scars from 8+ years of having to dress up as a "welsh lady on March 1st. My mother was always too sensible cheap to fork out for a genuine welsh lady hat from the local tourist shop so we had to improvise with yoghurt pots and black paper Hmm Grin

Killing myself laughing at the Virgin Badger. Grin
