AIBU?

to think it's really poor form to have pages and pages of posters baying for updates on a thread?

Prompted by the snooping MIL thread, but I've seen it lots before on other thread.

Some people aren't tied to MN, they're out living their lives. Their priority isn't to provide a living soap opera for the MN masses.

Can I point out the watch button up there ^ for those you haven't found it yet.

YABU.

Who is to decide on what is posted on threads. Are only note worthy opinions allowed?

Also, by bayingasking for updates, the OP has an idea of how much interest their thread has generated.

"Are only note worthy opinions allowed?"

Well, pages of "Come back OP and tell us what's happening" don't really make for great reading, that's true. Wink

The watch button is pointless in a long thread. If your posts are highlighted, you can easily scan through and find your place.

I really hate the MN police who feel they can dictate how threads can go. Unless you work for HQ, this is not your job.

So to sum up, YABVU.

And as for leaving a simple full stop to mark your place, surely that's just rude.

YABU It's no more bad form than the posters that complain about grammar, spelling, lack of paragraphs, user names, swearing, Netmum affectations, etc, the use of etc Grin.

I agree with you. It does look a bit sad and pathetic tbh. I often share the sentiment and would like updates on threads I've been interested in, but if people have already posted 'OP - come and give us an update when you can' then there is really no need for pages and pages of the same post. It must be pretty unnerving for the OP, especially if there is nothing interesting to add!

I think the same about the 'marking place' posts.

I just put the save bookmark thingy on the last post I read, then scroll through for any green posts after that if I want to see if there's been an update.

OP if you had read it you would have found some good info about why the watch function isn't as good as marking your place on the thread.

Often there's a mounting hysterical mob mentality too. Like people worrying for the OP's safety when there is patently nothing to worry about.

I think YANBU. Asking for an update is fine, especially if you are genuinely worried about the OP's situation, but if one or two posters have done this already recently you don't need everyone else following suit. I also don't see why you need to post on a thread to mark your place without saying anything of substance apart from "marking place" or similar. Seems a bit ghoulish IMO.

On the thread you are referring to, the OP has made it clear that she can't share the situation fully with anyone in RL and has appreciated the support and interest so YABU.

people worrying for the O's safety

On this point you are NBU as there is always at least one killjoy on what to most people is a light hearted thread.

It is a bit boring scanning through all the 'marking my place' stuff, and one liners.

It's human nature though, to add your little bit. Like popping your head round the door and saying 'any news? Oh. Later then'.

MNs aren't a 'hive mind', as is often quoted. We're all an individual with a mind of our own. In a 'waiting' situation we're all going to be thinking the same thing.

I wondered at those random posts with just a full stop were all about, that is pretty rude. It's a bit like the snooping MIL that the thread was about! To me those posters do not want to make a contribution but want to carry on snooping and can't be bothered to work out where they had got to in another way- that is pretty bad form.

I don't mind it so much, but what is needless, thoughtless and rude are posters criticising the OP for not returning immediately. It's not a fiction novel ffs, its someones life! And yes, that was aimed at you, cradlecrap

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 11/02/2013 10:27

Fish - but now that OP has to scroll through hundreds of posts when half of them are not actually saying anything except "marking place" or "please give update". Much harder to find the posts that are genuinely helpful or supportive.

GetOrf · 11/02/2013 10:28

I agree with sheherezade - cadle you were bloody rude on that thread, haranguing saying that the OP should see how many people wanted an update, with an angry face emoticon to boot.

Report
CadleCrap · 11/02/2013 10:29

The watch function shows only shows 18 posts and unless you remember to bookmark then you can't find the place you last left thethread. Therefore by marking your spot baying for an update you can see where you last posted.

Or sommat, I dunno I just scrolled past it Grin
