I'm a sahm, but now my children are of school age my lovely friend hired me to clean houses during school hours.

I'm not pearl clutching hopefully but the amount of times I go to clean some bathroom and see that the toilet isn't flushed is surprising.

If they nip to the loo before we leave for school and forget to flush (which they do more often than they should) it'll still be there when the cleaner gets there at 9am because I won't be back until later.

Yes of course it is gross. I feel obliged to wipe the seats and brush off any adhering substances from the bowls before our lovely cleaner gets to them.

I don't allow the cleaner to clean the toilet. I just can't expect anyone else to do that. That's just me though.

I always check loos and dirty undies laying about and stuff like this before my housekeeper arrives. I would also not expect her to clean ovens and stuff - I just think it is nice to be nice. She does clean/organise for us but ultimately she is a guest in my home and I would not expect her to do grim stuff as we are very grateful to have her.

It will probably be kids. Or someone having gone to loo in night and not flushed so as not to wake up family. I have never had a cleaner but some people I know with cleaners are the type that are always running around and extremely busy so I expect they would have run out the door in a major hurry.

It doesn't surprise me, some people are dirty fuckers. When I cleaned hotel rooms people would leave used condoms lying on the floor and all sorts.

I do make sure I wipe any wee off the toilet as I have 2 boys and they are a nightmare, I don't clean it properly before the cleaner comes though. I leave before DH and the DCs the day the cleaner comes so I wouldn't be that surprised if one of the DCs did not flush the chain.

I flush once in every three pees iyswim. If its yellow etc. But I am 100% sure I'd flush before a cleaner came. It's just sensible. I'd want the cleaner to scrub the bowl but not to have to deal with my actual effluent.

Buggerama, the desire to hide one's poo (bury it, flush it away, etc) is probably instinctual. I think most people are concerned about leaving something so personal and gross to be seen by anyone, even their cleaner.

I don't mind cleaning toilets. In fact, I like it. But, I once had a client with a broken toilet and four kids who kept on using it. Once a week, I'd pour a bucket of water in it to flush it and then clean it. (Imagine how gross it was after sitting there like that a week!) I asked her when she'd be getting it fixed and she indicated that it wasn't a priority so I told her I wouldn't clean that toilet any more. I don't mind cleaning toilets - I even put my hand in them and scrub them - but that was just disrespectful (and it was only one of several issues she had that made her not worth keeping as a client.)

If someone forgets to flush the loo, I don't care. And, I would hate to think that someone would NOT hire a cleaner because they stressed too much about trying to make things nice for me. But, I have my limits.

I have a written policy to the effect of:

"Health and Safety: MyCompanyName has a policy of not dealing with deposits of blood, urine, vomit or faeces, human or otherwise. Cleaners cannot remove or dispose of syringes. Cleaners will not empty or clean litter boxes or pick up animal droppings. If a property is found to be infested with vermin that may pose a health hazard to the cleaners, or may infest My Company Name equipment, then work will not be carried out until the situation has been resolved."

When I used to clean holiday cottages, some guests once got drunk and one of them was sick. They left the mess for me to clean. I had to clean it because it was a holiday rental and more guests were due in a few hours and of course someone had to clean it. But, the owner gave me their entire deposit!

If someone's dog has a little accident, no problem. But, if someone just expects me to deal with their biohazards because I'm "just a cleaner" then they can find somebody else.
