Sorry very boring, but not sure where else to ask with 45min to go before the midnight deadline! I filled in the form, but have had no confirmation email - did anyone else get one straight away? Thanks...

I got mine straight away but I did it 6 weeks ago - perhaps their systems are busy with all the last minute forms?

Did mine this eve and no email either - presume site v busy?

I also got a letter a couple of days later with instructions on how to reclaim if your circumstances change .

If you are over the threshold the govt is bringing in for Child Benefit you can ask to stop it, but the deadline for that is midnight. Otherwise they will continue to pay it and you will need to fill in a self assessment tax form at some point...

Done mine in the nick of time, no confirmation mail here either. Just a little stress on whether it was the right thing to opt out as it was a last minute dash - but we are fortunate to be in the "will definitely lose CB income zone" so at least it is simple this way.

I never got a letter about it. My dh earns more than 60k, I have 3 children, I earn about 8 k, I figured we would lose it. He's not their father but we are married. I filled it in last night asking to stop the payments and I have not received an email.

What a fiasco.

I cancelled mine on 22nd December and got an email at the time. I got my confirmation letter through about 2 days ago.

Until i read this thread i had no idea there was a form to be submitted or a deadline (i read papers and watch TV but this information seems to have slipped by me). I have submitted the form now (there was no timescale for doing this on the website) and submitted it. I will see what happens.

I did the email y'day and got an email this morning in the early hours. DH earns the threshold and I'm self employed but we didn't receive a letter at all. Am glad I read about it a few days ago. Better than DH getting another tax bill.

RainyAfternoon, I filled mine in around 6ish I would say, last night.

I did mine and got an email very soon after. Of course, the system was probably in meltdown last night (as these systems weren't built to cope with huge amounts of traffic).

whaaaaaaaat??? Email? Have they emailed you first to let you know you have to fill something in? DP earns over the threshold so we will lose it, not an issue, haven't even bothered claiming for the last DC as I knew we would lose it anyway, but I haven't received any letters/paperwork whatsoever informing me I need to do anything.

No, you have to 'opt out' if you know you fall over the threshold of £60k, otherwise it'll keep being paid to you but you'll be expected to pay it back at the end of the tax year via a tax bill ...

Google child benefit opt out online and it'll direct you.

bedmonster - no, I only found out yesterday from the BBC website that you needed to opt out before 7 Jan, otherwise you would continue to receive CB and then have to fill in a self assessment tax return at the end of the tax year. (or your partner if they are over the threshold). As evidenced by my 11.15pm message, I don't need another form filling in deadline in my life so would rather avoid that... But no, no letter from them to tell me I should do something, no communication, nothing....

I didn't get a letter or email to tell me to opt out. I called as I coundn't find be arsed to dig out my CB number and did it online too (you can't be too careful).

The email I got said:

Thank you for your request not to receive Child Benefit payments. Child Benefit Office will aim to process your request as quickly as possible and will write to you once confirmed.

If we need any further information we will contact you. Sometimes, for security reasons, we may not be able to reply by email. If this is the case we will telephone or write to you.

In the meantime if you wish to notify us of a change in your circumstances, please do so by visiting our website at

www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefitchanges and use the appropriate form or telephone the Child Benefit Helpline on Tel 0845 302 1444 or textphone 0845 302 1474.

Some customers will receive Child Benefit during January 2013 even where they have already asked for their payments to be stopped from 7 January. This is because Child Benefit payments are made on a cycle with some payments made in arrears. Customers receiving any such payment do not need to take any action.

I hope the Gvt spend the money wisely. They won't get a chance after the next election (they have pissed off just about everyone by now).
