I was convinced one of lines went as follows;
"Happy Christmas you old fucking cunt of a man"
Now, I find out I was wrong and I'm devastated. This has ruined my Christmas!

AIBU to feel that my version was much better?

YABU. You cannot improve on that song in any way, shape or form.

Ha!! Your version is well better!

I always thought it was "Happy Christmas you arsehole" but it turns out I was wrong too. Shame, I liked that version.

I used to think it was you arsewipe thank god
Rather than (i assume)
You arse, I thank god

CajaDeLaMemoria · 10/12/2012 15:58

Is it not "Happy Christmas you arsehole, thank god it's our last"?

I'm not going to look it up. You can't ruin it!

I don't know, I hate it so much I try not to listen.

We have a "version" playing at work that scrubs out the the phrase "you cheap lousy faggot" and replaces it with "you're cheap and you're haggard" followed immediately by "Happy christmas your arse I pray god it´s our last" and they've left in the phrase about "old slut on junk" earlier in the verse as well.

GRRR.

It was christmas eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me: won't see another one
And then they sang a song
The rare old mountain dew
I turned my face away and dreamed about you
Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one
I´ve got a feeling
This year´s for me and you
So happy christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
Where all our dreams come true.
[ Lyrics from: www.lyricsfreak.com/p/pogues/fairytale+of+new+york_20109730.html ]
They got cars big as bars
They got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It´s no place for the old
When you first took my hand on a cold christmas eve
You promised me broadway was waiting for me
You were handsome you were pretty
Queen of new york city when the band finished playing they yelled out for more
Sinatra was swinging all the drunks they were singing
We kissed on a corner
Then danced through the night.

And the boys from the NYPD choir were singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out for christmas day.

You´re a bum you´re a punk
You´re an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy christmas your arse I pray god it´s our last.

And the boys of the NYPD choir's still singing Galway Bay
And the bells were ringing out
For christmas day.

I could have been someone
Well so could anyone
You took my dreams from me
When I first found you
I kept them with me babe
I put them with my own
Can´t make it out alone
I´ve built my dreams around you

And the boys of the NYPD choir's still singing Galway Bay
And the bells are ringing out
For christmas day.

I'm sick of hearing it! It didn't get played nearly so often till it became "cool" a few years ago.

I've become a convert to The St Stephen's Day Murders.

I knew of two sisters whose name it was Christmas
And one was named Dawn of course, the other one was named Eve
I wonder if they grew up hating the season
Of the good will that lasts till the Feast of St. Stephen

For that is the time to eat, drink and be merry
'Til the beer is all spilled and the whiskey is flowed
And the whole family tree you neglected to bury
Are feeding their faces until they explode

There'll be laughter and tears over Tia Marias
Mixed up with that drink made from girdersAnd it's all we've got left as they draw their last breath
And it's nice for the kids as you finally get rid of them
In the St Stephen's Day Murders

Uncle is garglin' a heart-breaking air
While the babe in his arms pulls out all that remains of his hair
And we're not drunk enough yet to dare criticize
The great big kipper tie he's about to baptize
His gin-flavoured whispers and kisses of sherry
His best crimble shirt slung out over the shop
While the lights from the Christmas tree blow up the telly
His face closes in like an old cold pork chop

And the carcass of the beast left over from the feast
May still be found haunting the kitchen
And there's life in it yet we may live to regret
When the ones that we poisoned stop twitchinThere'll be laughter and tears over Tia Marias
Mixed up with that drink made from girders
And it's all we've got left as they draw their last breath
And it's nice for the kids as you finally get rid of them (rid of them!)
In the St Stephen's Day Murders

I thought this was going to be a thread based on the song, like the MN nativity thread.

You know - 'My DH called me an old slut on junk and I called him a scumbag and maggot. Should I LTB?'

Xmas Grin

I suppose it reflects the gruesome reality of Christmas and Life for some people, might be more reflective of life than some of the sickly sweet Christmas music.

The Thea Gilmore album, Strange Communion, with The St Stephen's Day murders on is ACE. I was exacerbating a very bad day a few weeks ago by being in Asda and the only thing that stopped me losing the plot entirely was that the music they were playing in the Christmas dept wasn't bloody Slade or something, but That'll Be Christmas from that album. Grin

DD is outraged by my latest Christmas album, Tinsel and Light (Tracy Thorne) as it features the line 'another nosebleed'. Cue 'urgh, urgh, horrible, why is that ian Christmas song ...'

It's not Christmas till me and my girlfriends have had our big night out and then sung "fairy tale of New York" all the way home. For some reason it's very cathartic and traditional to be very drunk and roaring the lines "the boys from the nypd choir still singing Galway bay" at a bad tempered taxi driver as we try to hang onto each other and our shoes. Classy scots lassies, we are. Xmas Grin

I think Kirsty McColl had a very emotional voice and this is more poignant given her early death.

Yes, I'm a big fan of Kirsty too. Listen to her a lot Xmas Smile

I was going to start an AIBU about this song. I loathe it with a passion. Shane McGowan really can't sing. It's a complete dirge to start with and I hate the twiddly twiddly stuff, although Kirsty is good.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 10/12/2012 17:35

It's no "Feliz Navidad"

Report
EuroShagmore · 10/12/2012 17:49

It is the only acceptable Christmas song.
