Horrific stories on Mail Online

i started reading Mail Online for showbiz and gossip when it first started, but now have noticed more and more often, stories they publish are now of child abuse and animal abuse. I have complained to the editors, but they do not respond. Today on MO there was a horrific story of a pedophile bringing a 15 month old baby he had abused, into hospital as she was dying. I was horrified at this, and why Mail Online would publish this, thinking we want to read stuff like this?.. I have written to 'Feedback' on MO to complain about the distressing articles they keep publishing, but they won't respond... What can I do? I suppose one option is to stop reading MO.

Well... You answered your own question at the end, OP.

Every time you read MO, you're contributing to their exceptionally high web traffic, which fuels the advertising revenue that keeps it going.

'Fraid the Mail revels in hysterical misery.

Yep, stop reading. It's the only way.

I think there should be something else that can be done, actually.

If you want to read a lot of schleb schizzle and crackers inflammatory Tory-sponsored bollocks then that's up to you.

But to put up images of people being "necklaced", cats and dogs being skinned alive, kittens being fed live to pythons, full-on descriptions of the inuries people have suffered in violent crime in the headline etc ... that's not really the remit of the Daily Mail, is it?

They often do take down vile stories like this if enough people complain, but it would be so nice if there were some sort of code of conduct that meant they didn't appear in the first place.

You got it. Stop reading. Not difficult.

I find it really upsetting too and try not to go near it now.

I think there's an element of sweeping it under the carpet in that, isn't there. Oh well, I don't read it so I don't have to worry about what the most-read newspaper in the UK is showing on its website. I think it should concern people, whether they look at the site or not.

I just accidentally saw the same link.

It's absolutely disgusting they can print the actual images. It's a complete lack of dignity to the little girl to post them and unnecessary in the reporting of the story. It's really upset me and I don't even read the daily fail!

I think it's sad that our news seems to be becoming more and more graphic. I wonder if we will become more desenstised. I don't know. I hate it though.

I find the Kitten Block incredibly useful in helping me avoid that site.

I used to read it because I liked ranting about the biased crap they print. But then I got sick of being shown horribly graphic photos on the front page with "warning graphic picture" written underneath.... what's the point in warning me after I've seen it?

Jesusthecabbagevan - not a very helpful response?

I know those things happen, and having a 17 month old daughter, it's distressing to read about, and I want to stop those things happening, and can't believe we live in a world where vile monsters do things like that.

they do tend to fan the flames with these sort of stories (adding images/videos etc)

second world horror stories about nazis are top of their lists too, not that i don't think it should be reported, just not in such sensationalist ways

I think it does it in rotation - horrendous abuse stories, health scare (ESP cancer which they often repeat), infertility/childbirth fear ones , crime Etc

Yes It s vile but there must be something in the editorial thinking as it gets tons of hits. Maybe it's the online equivalent of rubbernecking.

What did you expect them to do? Message back and say they'll only publish nice stories just for you Confused

Thanks stickemwiththepointyend for the info on Kitten Block. I hadn't heard of this before.
I wish I could make a difference, help stop this horrific abuse going on.

Op, it's horrible, but please bear in mind that the Mail will sensationalise the movement of a slug. Really, stop reading. Try BBC?

Ghosts ip - yes, make them realise that no one wants to see stories like that

This story was also on the bbc news site today. They also had a clip of the CCTV from the hospital that I couldn't bring myself to watch. The still picture was enough Sad

I'll admit to flicking through the site, it's an easy layout for browsing, they have some good trashy shoebox stuff and I love reading the comments....but I've had to stop.

I can cope with a disturbing headline, but graphic pictures of tortured animals or people been murdered is too much for me. If I choose to read those kinds of articles I'll have prepared myself, but to come across them while casually browsing is really upsetting.

You get banned on most websites for posting 'shock' pics of gore, the dm is living up to it's name of the biggest troll in the media.

I think I'll try writing to the Daily Mail newspaper, as they don't seem to publish the same sort of stuff, see what happens.
I'll have to use Kitten Block
The images will be imprinted on my brain...
Shit, I hate this world sometimes, those poor babies.

There seems to be no limit to what the daily mail are willing to print no matter how atrocious but on the other hand, when it comes stories of abuse it's the cold hard truth and something we should never just pretend isn't happening.

Interesting thread, because I too began reading Mail Online for showbiz gossip and to get a different perspective I suppose. I took me a while to realise this was where all the Bad Stuff was. But Minge makes a good point - they aren't making it all up are they - I mean most of this stuff is actually happening, if not in this country then another, and sometimes yes, in this country.

I've often hear people say that there isn't more crime etc around "nowadays", its just that we hear more about it now that everyone has access to shedloads of media. Actually I think even with all the media available to us, papers like the Mail only serve to show us the tip of a hellish iceberg.

Or maybe I've been reading too much MOL ....Sad

Report
hudjes · 04/12/2012 22:12

Mingebiscuits yes I know it happens, and im not pretending it doesnt, but it shouldn't be on the same page as showbiz gossip, ie which the Mail Online was originally, for people to come across when looking at gossip.

The DM wallows in sex and death, and I think we do as a society need to be concerned about what impressionable people are reading, and the normalisation of such stories is worrying. Videos of lynch mobs 'necklacing' university students, and articles claiming that female porn actresses get a better quality of life than most (two stories that the mail has run recently) should not be on a website that is accessible by anyone.

The ridiculous thing is that the DM seems to think it's some pillar of the community watchdog over benefit scroungers, paedophiles, and worst of all, single mothers, when actually it promotes some of the lowest forms of reportage out there.

And don't get me started on their typos, dreadful grammar, and Americanisms...
