AIBU?

Is wearing a headscarf somehow insulting to muslims?

Sorry if this comes out wrong.

Quite often in extremes of weather (both hot and cold) I feel more comfortable with my head covered. In fact, I have been known to do it in private anyway. I suppose it is to o with me being a bit weird with sensory stuff and it making me feel secure, but I also think it looks nice (I have some lovely scarves, but I suppose I do tend to buy them in quite asian areas). I also cover my hair when baking and just leave it on. Sometimes it is a hippy style, sometimes it is wrapped round my neck abd covering my hair completely, sometimes just kind of loosely draped on my head and shoulders.

I also quite often wear long flowing dark clothes, mostly because I find them more practical - nobody wants to see random bits of my flesh poking out when I bend over to help the kids.

A couple of people have said I sometimes look Islamic, or like some kind of russian peasant or Amish. Some people have assumed it is some kind of political statement to look traditional Russian.

I honestly don't do this on purpose - sometimes I wear miniskirts and doc martens.

I'm just a bit worried that this is a kind of 'badge' of Islam for many people, and I would hate to offend anyone.

AIBU?

Pathetic. The Queen wears headscarves. Princess Anne wears headscarves. So do thousands of women in the UK. To keep their ears warm and to preserve their hairstyle. Hmm

People are simply stupid and ignorant. Even the queen wears a headscarf so does Princess Anne and millions of others including Evangelical or Orthodox Chritians all over the world and don't forget the Orthodox Jews....

I think it goes without saying, that you wear what you want and what you like!!!!!

Blush. Good :-)

I'm quite anxious, I would hate someone to come up to me and speak in Arabic and me just look blankly at them!

It isn't in an old lady style (although I do that sometimes too) and I come from a town with a high muslim population so it is basically old women and muslims in headscarves.

No, it wouldn't offend me. People from all cultures and for all reasons cover their head.

One of the best things about wearing a headscarf is never having cold ears Smile

Wear your headscarf!!! Whether its the religious beliefs of millions or the belief of one person who just really loves her headscarf... Every individual person on this earth has a right to be themselves and wear what they want. It's just a headscarf. don't let people freak you out. And yes, Princess Ann rocks her headscarf, and so do hundred's of cancer sufferers everyday. No one thinks they are being rude.....

I wear a big wooly hat in winter. Should I stop in case I offend Rastas?

Yes - a bit of a coincidence about the Queen and Princess Anne - they were the first people to come into my head. Grin

You realise all Muslims don't speak Arabic?

Report
worldcitizen · 08/11/2012 22:33

And please, it's also in your head. No Muslim would come to you and express something along the lines of you doing something which supposedly belongs to them Hmm

Would you care if you offended obviously really easily offendable complete strangers?

I wouldn't.

There are pearl clutchers everywhere...you can't please them all.

I would hate someone to come up to me and speak in Arabic and me just look blankly at them!

That happens to a friend of mine who is Colombian and married a muslim. She often wears a scarf.

But not all muslims speak arabic. Some speak Turkish, others Persian, etc.
It depends on whether your scarf looks like what an arab woman would wear.

But wear it away.

Yes and Arabs are also not all Muslim. Please don't forget that Arabs are also Christians and Jews!!!!!

worldcitizen · 08/11/2012 22:36

And there is also not one general way of how an Arab woman would wear a scarf.

It is different from country to country, and also different among generations and also different depending on which role religious depth plays etc....Lots of variables.

Softly, I know, but like I say, my home town has a large muslim population where a lot of people do speak Arabic or Urdu. I have absolutely no issue with this, I'm just a bit worried that a few friends have remarked on it.

I'm relieved that IABU :-)

I have a couple of converted family members who comment on it being nice to see modest muslim women walking about (not about me, on facebook when they have been out doing a kind of evangelical muslim stall thing that they do) (I used to be a member of an evangelical christian church, so no judging there either)

But they are pretty unusual I think.

Kind of in the way some christians get really annoyed a people only going to church for weddings. Like I am somehow playing at religion.

Really sorry if I insulted anyone. Just what I was trying to avoid :-(
