AIBU?

Poss sensitive - To think this DJ was ridiculous and tell the radio station?

Driving about this afternoon and my local radio station played "Small Bump" by Ed Sheeran. As you may know, this is about a baby who was stillborn at four months, which is revealed at the end if the song (lyrics " you're just a small bump unborn for four months, then torn from life. Maybe you were needed up there, but we're still unaware as why). I don't expect EVERYONE to know this, but would expect someone who plays songs for a living to be aware.

The DJ came in after the song finished and said (paraphrasing) "Awwww, that's such a cute song, playing that for everyone who is pregnant at the moment!". Which, bearing in mind it's about someone LOSING a baby, is pretty fucking insensitive.

AIBU to think that she should have been aware what the song was about (or maybe just bloody listened to it properly as she played it?) and WIBU to contact the radio station, not in a 'disgusted of Tunbrudge Wells' way, more to say look, she really ought to know better, and this could have caused upset, you might want to ensure it doesn't happen again and hire more intelligent DJs

I don't think it's a matter of being more intelligent. The DJ obviously hadn't heard all of the song or listened to the lyrics properly. And DJs don't generally choose the music, either; it's the producer's job to do that.

My sister used to be a producer and even she didn't choose the playlist. Apparently it all comes from on high. They're doing loads of things while the music is playing, so she might not have a chance to really listen to it.

I think it's reasonable to email the station and tell the DJ actually it's about pregnancy loss, so not so cute for a lot of pg women. Certainly not cute for me right now, I'd feel pretty sensitive about it too Sad I'm sure lots of people won't though....

I know they don't choose the music, but as a DJ they should surely have SOME clue as to what it's about? It's quite prevalent on their playlist.

I think emailing would be a fairly sensible thing to do.

Sorry Tasmanian. Hope you didn't find the post upsetting. I lost a few between dd and DS and had really bad antenatal depression and anxiety the whole time with DS and this would have really upset me back then.

It is surprising how many people do NOT listen to all the lyrics of a song .... they will take the chorus usually and attach whatever meaning is relevant to what they hear ( as opposed to what it actually said / meant).

One very, very popular song played at many a funeral, especially babies, is a very clear example of this as if one listens to the song its about a topic certainly not appropriate to the loss of a baby.

Maybe the staiton might appreciate a "heads up" re the comments ..... but there are many lyrics that are misunderstood and unless each and every song comes with a "contents" precis doubt each and every producer / presenter will listen / understand every piece they play.

sorry. pressed enter too soon.

I can see how it can be upsetting if someone listening that knows the song hear the remarks

I think they would definitely appreciate the email. She'll probably be mortified.

It's amazing how many people don't realise how sad this song is. Because it is only the last line that reveals the ending Sad.

ds2 did worse than your dj. He played it for his school music exam, and it was only at the end he looked up and remembered that his music teacher was pregnant. He at least had the grace to apologise.

Please, I'm intrigued!

Mamabear, it's not as bad as Wires by Razorlight - which has a HAPPY ending but still makes me sob, having had a nicu baby.

I really like that song, have listened to it a lot and have never picked up on the lyrics about the baby dying, perhaps there is a long version and a short version? Radio edits can sometimes leave out half the song so maybe that is the version they have?

The first time I heard the song it was introduced as being for his "first baby" and the DJ said it was lovely.

I've never been able to make out all the words but I thought it was about a living or due baby.

but by all means email to inform them, rather than scold, I genuinely never picked up on that line!

its very common for lyrics to be totally misunderstood! Just look at people's choices of wedding songs for a start!

Can I please know the song?

I have a real interest in lyrics (saddo)

Report
stinkinseamonkey · 08/11/2012 19:30

I thought it was about the anxiety around pregnancy and scans etc and hoping it would all be alright and the roller coaster of loving something so fragile etc. Didn't know it had an "ending" as such

Wires isn't by Razorlight...it's by Athlete IIRC.
