Groan, saw this post about shoeboxes yesterday, didn't we do this last year? This humanist wants us to stop sending shoeboxes to kids overseas at Christmas, what's her gig? I don't know but humanists would have us cancel Christmas, this is the thin end of the wedge! Just a thought. Kate

Haven't seen said thread but I don't think it's her humanism that's objecting to the shoeboxes, more that she's personally uncharitable and using humanism as an excuse perhaps? I consider myself humanist and I would never call for an end to the shoeboxes. Much less Christmas, which really is a silly thing for you to say.

Shoeboxes are often for Samaritan's Purse - that's what I would object to anyway!

What post about shoe boxes? Can't possibly have an opinion without reading it. Where is it?

Cripes SGM and PinkieMinx, I had no idea they ended up there! There's an organisation here called Mustard Seed that collects them and sends them off. I wonder if they go via Samaritan's Purse...

Children filling shoeboxes was more about raising the profile than truly appropriate aid.
Still worthwhile if it engages the previously uninterested and gets people talking about solutions.
Yes, it is infuriating when they are stuffed with evangelical woffle

Welcome to MN, Katie1965. I think if you read the various threads about Operation Christmas Child or Samaritan's Purse, you will find that there are plenty of Christians objecting to their methods as well as non-religious people. No one is wanting to cancel Christmas.

The main point is that Samaritan's Purse is very clear on its website that the boxes are used as a tool for evangelism, but that is not made clear to families who are encouraged to fill shoeboxes for collection from their children's schools.

Personally I would rather donate to a charity that helps those in need all year round with no strings attached (eg Oxfam, Unicef, Save the Children, Christian Aid), not an organisation whose primary aim is missionary activity.

I think you have your answers.

I don't really need to add more, but I would suggest that you read up a bit on Humansism before you criticise an entire community.

Well, no one's actually said it yet so.... YABU. For all the reasons already posted.

Keep posting though. Wink
