Ad for the vtech storio, plastic book reader for kids, opens with the words "once upon a time there were books...now there is storio!" I felt like crying. Please tell me you agree that books will never be replaced by this tat?!

I cry everytime I see someone reading a book on an iPad or an E-Reader....

YANBU. My DD loves (eating) books.

They tried to kill vinyl records. They couldn't.

Fear not, common sense prevails eventually.

Storio my arse!

They didn't kill them, but I don't own any and neither do most of my friends. Maybe storio is the future and one day our children will be laughing at our old fashioned book we actually had to read ourselves!

I don't know what a storio is and I don't want to know........long live the actual real life book Grin

I love books.

But I can also see the appeal of something that doesn´t take up so much room tbh.

Would be handy for school rather than children lugging loads of books about & probably wouldn´t need replacing so often.

Also, not sure about how they work, but for example when ?uro came into play here, it made many school books obsolete at quite a cost.

They won't be replaced by tat, but they certainly will (sob) be replaced by e-book readers in years to come. We are heading towards a paperless society.

Think about it - most people use i-pods now and download music. The number of people buying cds has dropped dramatically. Eventually we will download all our music (AND books) from the internet.

I also love books (and libraries) but they're not here to stay imo.

YANBU :(

I'm sure it is the way of the future but a house without full-up bookshelves is not a home IMO.

Books will be so much harder to replace than the different musical formats. Books are still the most portable and best designed way to produce written works. It'll all be ok!

They wont replace books. But I have had a play with one at work and they are very good IMO for long car journeys, much more preferable to DVD players on the headrests.

I'm glad some of you think books will be around for a bit longer at least! My very small house would be a little more spacious if I got rid of my books but I never will!

I'm not so sure... How many books can you fit in one little Kindle? Loads!
Newspapers will be first to go, then magazines, then books :( !

A book never runs out of battery power in the middle of a good bit...

...oh and they smell wonderful (anyone else a book sniffer).

I was going to get his but decided not to as it was fairly expensive for what it was. I wanted it because although he loves books, he tends to rip them up and it would have been ideal because he loves gadgets and stuff.

YABU, there will always be books, this is just a marketing ploy. Nerdyface, chill! I pads just take reading to another dimension, if it encourages people to read than thats a good thing.

BuzzingNoise · 29/09/2010 19:29

Pigletmania has a good point I suppose.

it's an advert and all adverts talk crap, have you never noticed that before?

Report
washngo · 29/09/2010 19:40

Good point rathersplendid, it's not terribly surprising is it! Just a tad shameless (again not that surprising given it is an advert).
