Watched last night and love it, but occurred to me when they describe all the potential pitfalls of each kind of baking that if I hadn't done it before I might be a bit put off? I def thought bread making sounded far too complicated. I guess they're trying to big up baking as a skill, which I applaud but it is possible to start without a degree in molecular gastronomy!

Oh yes it is a bit serious isn't it. My victoria sandwich sponge mix always curdles - it doesn't matter how slow I add the egg. But they'd have you think it would be like eating a brick but its still light, moist and fluffy so who knew.

It is pretty serious if you do patisserie at college level - but then you'd expect it to be.

Home baking - not so much. Its hard to make a really awful cake unless you have a proper dogey oven.

Must agree re: sponge mix curdling. It really does not make a bad cake, if it curdles a bit.

and the main thing about home baking is that usually you're doing it for friends and family - I'd be scared to make something like that competitive. Not that you shouldn't and I'd love to win, just would add performance anxiety to something that is relaxing at the mo.

I got invited to apply for this via my local amdram group - I suppose they thought we'd make good telly - however me and the other lady who bakes had no 'funny' baking-related anecdotes to offer on our application forms so we never made it... what a pity :o
