AIBU?

to be annoyed about the landlords gas safety check???

Got a phone call while on holiday a few weeks ago from the letting agent saying the gas safety check was due - could the bloke come and do it that week,

No - I wasn't there.

So - arranged for him to come this last Wednesday (I got back at 7pm on the Tuesday night). Stayed in all day with an empty fridge and boys driving me up the wall only to get a phone call at 6pm saying "sorry won't be until Friday afternoon"

Friday afternoon rolled by yesterday - still hadn't turned up.

He's just turned up now. Obviously I've let him in to do it - but am quite p*ssed off that it wasn't done when they said it would be done.

I'm properly child free for the first time in weeks (boys went off to their dads about 45 minutes ago), and was just settling down chilling and now my peace has been shattered

ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Get a grip it's only an inconvenience, who knows the tester man might have had a family berevement or a Dr's appoint.

Gas safety checks save lives would you rather he didn't come round at all?

faerie, what nonsense! If he couldn't come, he should have informed her! Not to do so, regardless of the reason, it is just rude.

OP - YANBU.

Oh right, cause if he had a solid reason like a berevement he would have had time to phone.

Let's look at the bigger picture, he missed an appointment. It's an annoyance and petty but it's hardly the end of the world.

There's a lot worse than missed appointments

I would rather he stuck to his appointment days.

He was off to a wedding today (he informed me as he left)

It was a bloody huge inconvinience to me - I came home on Tuesday night to an empty fridge, I have 3 children - I kept them in the entire day on Wednesday to wait for someone that didn't show up. It cost me a bloody fortune at the corner shop to buy food for their dinner once I realised he wasn't showing,

I had rung the letting agent in the morning to check what time he was showing up, she said she didn't know as the landlord had arranged it and I should ring him and ask him (she also said she'd try and get hold to ask him as well).

It was 6pm when the landlord got back to her to say that actually he'd arranged for it to be done on Friday afternoon.

I waited in again on Friday afternoon, and he didn't show - again 3 impatient children who wanted to go out (as I did - I still have school uniforms to buy! - and I don't have them this weekend so can't do it now).

There was no phone call to say he wouldn't be coming (he's a friend of the LL's - so surely someone could have contacted me?).

He turned up this morning unannounced.

Now - if we look at your statement "would you rather the check wasn't done".........well - what if I'd gone out (I nearly did) - and he'd showed up and there was no-one to let him in to do the check? How would that be any safer???

OH - and his comment this morning when I answered the door and he said who he was and I said "oh I was expecting you yesterday" -

"were you? oh right, I'm here now"

And yes I know there's a lot worse than missed appointments - trust me you don't need to tell me that

Our HA has changed the company who do the gas safety checks again. Received a letter telling us what day they were coming and the fact that it was an afternoon call.
Phoned and changed it to a more convenient day. Has anyone here ever used them or live in an HA property where your HA uses them.

manti getting through to them on the phone is a nightmare The call i missed from them was on a number that doesnt take incoming calls. Bloody useless.

Got a call from them and they said they arent coming They have only just found out that the engineer wasnt in today. And if i hadnt kept checking up on them and ringing around i would still be sitting here like an idiot.

Best bit is that Sanctuary Housing have told me that the reason they got rid of Carillion is because they were not turning up to appointments HAH LIKE LIBERTY GAS you mean.

Carillion were turning up They turned up for our appointments every time. What a load of bollocks Something very fishy going on here.

Well I've just double checked the HA website and now it's Suregroup but the letter on my fridge says Liberty. Either they've taken the contract from them or they have the wrong name on the website. (Used to be IDM)

why didnt the agent give him a key and tell him to let himself in and lock up when he finished?

Why do you even need to be there?

This thread is over 3 years old, have you been waiting in for the gas fitter to come for all that time?

I was looking for other people whove had similar experiences and found this thread,

beast just because you dont mind strangers in your own home when you are not there doesnt mean others feel the same.
If something went missing from your home during this visit would your insurance cover it. If so please give me the name of your insurance company cos they must be pretty special.

Dark I just think it is the most pragmatic way for these things to be done. I allow certain people into my house when I am out, not because I am naive but because those people are traceable. The gas company will know exactly who has been in your house and their staff will know the score about being accused of theft.

It was actually meant as a serious suggestion to resolve this with your landlord and save you the bother in future, and its what a lot of people actually do.

I want to know why they are saying that the contract with Carillion ended because they wernt turning up when thats bollocks.
Its Liberty who havent turned up today. And their phone no doesnt take incoming calls.

I dont want people who have already shown themselves to be incompetent in my flat when i am not here.
And i cant give the key to an agent even if they wanted to The HA are in another county.

Report
Beastofburden · 23/09/2013 16:09

If they are really incompetent then there is a bigger problem. Do you trust them to do the gas safety certificate OK? I'm not trying to be funny- you are trusting them with your safety. We had someone at work die from carbon monoxide poisoning- turned out she and her DH had been given a gas safety certificate which failed the appliance but they didnt understand that this meant they had to not use it, they thought it just meant, get it fixed as soon as you can. It was horrible.

God I'd have been delighted if they'd done it whilst I wasn't there! There's nothing more tedious than waiting for maintenance people!

beast thats awful. Sad It was the way i was spoken to on the phone by the caller from Liberty No wonder they make it so they dont receieve incoming calls.
The left hand doesnt know what the right hand is doing so i have ZERO CONFIDENCE.

It's very annoying when people treat you as if your time has no value. I've been lucky in the people who have needed to come into my home to check stuff- I've always kown pretty much who was in charge of them. I suspect this is another cost-cutting outsourcing thing Sad.

dark DO get a CO2 monitor. There are free ones offered from time to time as part of awareness campaigns. Dont trust them to look after you properly.
