My friend just called from the playground. announced at 3.05pm. for tomorrow. people are very cross becasue they had it as an all day event with picnic, so, dads, and others (including me) had taken the day off work. might be postponed. till next week ?
is this due to health and safety ?
is the weather forecast for tomorrow that bad ?
am rite cross.

Well it's due to thunderstorm. Don't think your picnic would be too much fun

YABU. Surely it is better to be given advance notice so you can rearrange work commitments, than to be told on the day.

Last week ours as nearly canx due to it being too hot. 'fraid this week it's the rain! Hard luck but not much you can do about that unless you have a weather nuking device ready to launch !

what are you cross about?

Do you mean cross in general at the weather or with the school? Can't see what the school have done wrong tbh?

It is a shame but yabu. Sports Days are always at the mercy of the weather unfortunately. Schools can put a date in the diary but it is always a hope rather than expectation that it will happen!

Schools are aware that working parents have to take time off etc and hate cancelling them but with the best will in the world - they really can't do anything about it. We tried holding it in our school hall as an alternative one year but that didn't work as there was no room for any parents to watch.

Another year (couple of years ago - the really rainy/floody summer) we weren't able to hold one at all, so since that year we have put the date in earlier so that we should still be able to fit it in even if the weather isn't good enough on the day.

TBH you should be happy that they at least made the decision tday rather than leavng it until tomorrow. That might mean that some parents will be able to go in to work tomorrow and arrange an alternative day off next week.

oh i thought thta announcing it this afternoon for tomorrow, was short notice. i stand corrected.
it did rain last year. and we had to take our picnic intot he school hall.
was fine with us. maybe it was a problem to the school.
bit of rain never hurt anyone. unless some kid falls over and someone decides to sue the school i guess.
just a bit cross = disappointed i guess. ds1(6) was looking forward to it. all the kids were very very excited, it seemed. so was dh and i. i guess becasue in the olden days it was just a quick race, at the end of the day, that some parents seems to manage to get to. but these days its an all day event and it seems to have become HUGE for everyone.
never mind. you are right. not that bigga deal.

I wish ours had made that decision today... our sports day is also tomorrow and they wont tell us until we arrive at school in the morning... and it's an all day picnic affair too (or not, depending on the weather). I am assuming it will be postponed, but still have to make arrangements (and a picnic) as though it's on - just in case... so it would have made me happy they'd cancelled it today and you annoyed - no pleasing everyone is there!!

seems weird to cancel now and not wait for tomorrows weather - it may be okish

unfortunally teachers dont often reliese the hassle of postponing it to another day for working parents

it pissed down this morning but was semi dry after lunch so school went ahead and had slight drizzle but generally ok weather and then got nursery one tomorrow

again would be easier if school and nurserys that are co joined had on same day, one in am and one in pm, so only need one day off

I think schools are in a no-win situation here.

Our sports day was last week - infants in the morning, juniors in the afternoon.
On the day it was v overcast and rain was forecast. The infants sports went ahead and it remained dry.
For the junior sports we have to ferry equipment (and children) across a road. Staff spent all dinnertime sorting and moving equipment. The sky was v v grey but it was still dry.
Sports was due to start at 1.15pm
At 1.10pm we started to walk the children across to the field, at 1.12pm it started to rain so we had to turn around, trek back into school and cancel sports.

Reactions from parents have been
a) you should have cancelled yesterday, you knew it was going to rain becaus it was forecast
b)what a shame, you all tried your best
c)why didn't you make a decision first thing this morning, my day has been wasted now
d)it was raining that much, why didn't you carry on

We know that had we canelled this morning (or yesterday) and the weather had been good parents would have been furious.
If we had carried on in the rain parents would have been cross because their children were getting wet and may have slipped on the wet grass.

Thank goodness it is only once a year!
