We are emigrating in May to Oz - my son is allergic to nuts/sesame and egg and worried about schooling. Does anyone know if any school on sunshine coast (we will be near Maroochydore/Caloundra/Nambour) ? It is a big worry for me.

hayleyhew not really sure on those areas. Was it you that was going to live in Bribie and travel to the Mater hospital?

I am just south of the Sunshine Coast and have a fabulous school with regards to nut allergies. Otherwise it is only just becoming a big thing here. They cannot legally ban nut products but they can request that they not be brought into the school. Also check if they have any teachers trained in Anaphylaxis and procedures put in place.

Interestingly, my specialist (London trained) and is quite well known in the field internationally, does not believe in banning nuts in schools. If you go to the qld education website there is a spiel about Anaphylaxis in qld schools and she puts forward her opinion re banning nuts.

We only have two allergy specialists in whole of south east Qld so you might want to get a referral and be put on the list asap when you get here. The wait is about 16 months.

You need to get a referral from your general practitioner when you get here and then phone for an appointment. I would suggest you bring a letter from your Doctor over there to give the gp here so that he can refer you on.

Check the qld education website for a listing of schools in those areas. Most schools have websites these days where you may be able to check their policy or contact them via email re their nut policy.

My experience is that the public schools seem to be a little better than the private schools with regard to asking nuts not be brought into the school.
