Allergies and intolerances

Tomato allergy, what other foods are in the same group?

My dd3 12 months, appears to have a nasty skin reaction to any form of tomato, whether, fresh or in sauces like spag bol and baked beans etc. It leaves a nasty red rash on her skin, mostly her face where the tomato has touched and it is obviously very irritating to her. I have to avoid it completely now, but someone pointed out there are other foods within the same 'family' that are likely to cause the same reaction. Does anyone know what these could be? thanks

Scientifically I have no idea!

However, my SIL cannot touch or eat tomatoes and can't touch potato or apple skins although she can eat both cooked.

Aren't potato and tomato the deadly nightshade group? Don't know what that means in practice though.

I think I read that Kif as well somewhere. And aubergene as well. Susannah Olivier has a book called "what shall I feel my baby" and I have a feeling it was there that I read it and that she advises holding off with foods from deadly nightshade group until 12 months plus. Not sure where the book is so I can't check and I might have made it up !

Peppers, potatoes, chilli, aubergine and (not that I think you will) tobacco, cherries ( not sure about that one!) and paprika

FWIW, DS1 used to get a red rash round his face after tomato based sauces, but he grew out of it by the time he was 3.

This is interesting. We are currently excluding tomato for ds2 (3.11) as he appears to have some sort of food intolerance that causes almost constant diarrhoea. Useful to know what's in the same family.

If it turns out not be tomato though, we have to put him on a hypoallergenic diet which is virtually nothing, but does include potato, though from this information, potato is also a potential allergen... God, I hope it's tomato, or the poor child is going to starve for a fortnight.

I had this tomato allergy, and was also slightly allergic to peppers. Never showed a reaction to potatoes though. Not sure if I was tested for tobacco or aubergines.

my dd is 12m and gets a rash around her mouth when she has eaten fresh tomato (where juice touches) but not when its cooked - similarly she has no probs with potato etc. i had heard that about deadly nightshade group, but my dh (who is a doc but not a peadiatrician) suggested it was contact dermatitis caused by the acidity of the tomato juice. she does have sensitive skin so i wondered if there was something in that theory.

Thankyou everyone. We don't seem to have probs with potato, so that's good. Strawberries are also a problem, cause the same rash and itching. Could be 'red foods' I suppose. Let's hope she just grows out of it, sure she will

When you say that you have to avoid it completely now - why? I showed dd's paed a pic of the red rash that she gets from tomatoes, but he said not to avoid them, and that she'd almost certainly grow out of it. Have you seen a paed that has advised differently?

my dd (2.5) gets a rash with some tomatoes - she seems fine with some tinned tomatoes and not with others. It vanishes pretty quickly and does not itch. The dermatologist seemed to think it was not a problem. Today she had a similar reaction to my leek and potato soup! I had not noticed it before with potato

MY DD HAS A TOMATO ALLERGY SO WE HAVE BEEN ADVISED TO ONLY EAT THEM IN MODERATION NOW. WE HAD SKIN PRICK TESTS DONE BUT THE PEPPERS CAME OUT WORSE SO WE HAVE TO AVOID THESE TOTALLY FOR A COUPLE YEARS.

Hmmm this is interesting. My DS is 5 and his tomato 'allergy' seems to be getting worse. He has reacted to strawberries in the past too. Havent ever taken him to the docs tho as so long as I wipe off the ketchup etc from his face quickly it disappears on its own although if its particularly nasty I give him piriton. Should I get checked out at the docs do you think?
