Intolerance??

Hi everyone, hope someone has an explanation for me...
My DS is 19 months and very recently,(within the last three weeks) has developed a strange pattern that i can't seem to isolate.
It seems to be only every other day, which is odd. He will start the day fine, eating normally and drinking. As the day wears on, his belly will grow, and by bath time in the evening he looks like he has malnutrition! His stomach is really hard, looks pregnant! He has had very pale loose poo too. Looks like rice pudding, very smelly.
I rang NHS Direct who suggested allergy. It doesn't matter what he eats, its the same result. Today at nursery, one of the ladies said he appeared to have a hives type rash, but it went down.
I'm going to contact the gp tomorrow, but wondered if anyone has had similar things with their toddlers?
I thought he may have had a bug, but there's no temperature, he's happy and playing normally, just full of wind and now these blotches!

Seems like a malabsorption problem.

Do you remember what he ate on the days when he ends up with a bloated tummy? It may be a particular thing you are using on the days it happens.

Has he had a stomach bug or taken antibiotics recently? These may cause temporary intolerance but if you add probiotics to restablish the gut flora he may be back to normal in a few weeks time.
