Allergies and intolerances

Dairy trials - best way to go about it?

LO has been on Neocate since 3 months due to reflux and bad wind. It helped the wind but had little impact on the reflux, but we were advised to carry on and wean her dairy free in case.

She is now a year old and allergist suggested we could try cooked dairy to see if there is really a problem still (as it was only an intolerance rather than an allergy). Is the best thing to do something like swap her soya cheese for dairy cheese in a cheese sauce or something? I have no intention of changing from Neocate or anything at the moment but would like to see if she can tolerate dairy in cooked foods.

Any tips or experiences of trying? What were common reactions if there was still a problem?

thanks
alice

my LO was also cows milk intolerant. We tried her with yoghurt at one year old - gave her half a spoonful then waited, then a bit more and so on.
She was fine. I think you'd be expecting the same kind of response as before - so may not necessarily get any immediate reaction unless she vomits.
Why not try her with things with very very little cooked dairy in like cake over a week or so and see how she goes then progress to 'pure' dairy like cheese sauces etc.

live yoghurt contains bacteria that help digest lactose so is more readily tolerated than milk. Processing changes milk protein so it becomes less allergenic. Either is better to try than milk, even cooked milk. If she's been on probiotics I'd try cheese first, if not as it was wind I'd try the live yoghurt first.

Bit surprised you were told to stay dairy free. Many babies with symptoms that are more obviously caused by dairy don't get that advice.

thanks both,

think i'll go with cooked cheese in something as she won't eat yogurt at the moment(went on strike at about 8 months!).

We were told to stay dairy free because her reflux was so severe, just in case it was a contributory factor (though it clearly wasnt the only one as it has remained a problem of varying degrees).
