latex allergy - is it possiblre to develop in adulthood? Fanjo/Condom question

Changed my name.....

Is anyone allergic to condoms?

Some background
After my first pregancy I develop mild allergies to a variety of fruits: strawberries, bananas, kiwis, lemons, etc. My tongue gets really sore. Doctor thought I had 'geographic tongue' - which is honestly a real condition . This has been going on for about 4 years now and I just accept it.

However, in the last year, we have been using condoms for a variety of reasons. I have never used condoms much in the past. had only a couple of long term relationships where we used condoms to start with then went on the pill. For brief flings, used condoms.

When I met DH, we used condoms and I developed a bizarre fanjo problem. Both got tested at the clinic - nothing wrong with either of us. It has flared up from time to time.

Anyway - back to the story. Since we started using condoms again in the last year, the fanjo problem keeps coming back but has been more thrush-like but without the cottage cheese gunkiness. Not been having sex much until recently so did not really connect the two.

But now that things are getting back on track in that department I am starting to make a connectiom.

This morning, I am in agony. Itchy, swollen and red.

Took the kids' piriton medicine an hour ago and it is beginning to subside.

What to do?
BTW it isn't UCM

forgot to mention that the worst reaction i get is to raw tomatoes.

And the relevance of the food reactions is that there is apparently a link between these and latex allergies

I think I ought to see the doctor to confirm really

I think you can develop allergies at any time.
You could try using avanti condoms which are latex free next time you have sex and see if that helps.

I think you can buy latex-free condoms can you not? Try them for a week or two,

Me, I'm am! I developed a latex allergy after years of wearing them for work. Looking back I realised that I always got thrush after using a condom, but never really thought too much of it.

I am also allergic to kiwis & balloons, which isn't unusual in latex allergy suffers

"after years of wearing them for work" Them being gloves, not condoms!

I am making allsorts of connections now and really think I am.

Do I need to go to the doctors?
I don't avoid the foods that I get reactions from but I if I eat a tomato, within seconds my tongue is really really sore and blotchy. I am fine if they are cooked. And not as bad if they are in a sandwoch and so do not make direct contact with my tongue. I would never eat a kiwi again as it hurts too much. Avocadoes are also bad. As is certain kinds of houmous. SOmetimes cheap beer or wine.

You do sound like you have geographical tounge, which isn't caused by allergies, but I am surprised that you do not know that acidic foods/drinks will irritate it (not surprised at you, but your dentist should have pointed it out when it was diagnosed). Alochol will irritate it to, as will smoking & highly spiced food.

This, coupled with the allergenic food will cause you many problems. I always feel that to continue eating foods you are allergic to is playing with fire. I mean, if you were allergic to peanuts, you wouldn't still eat THEM, would you? Allergies to food can worsen with extended contact.

I think you need to find out whether you are allergic to these foods, or is it that they simply agrevate the tounge?

I think I do have geographic tongue (which i diagnosed myself about 3 years ago as the dentist and doctors did not know what it was)

That link is interesting as it said it can be triggered by allergies.

I would go to the doctor and ask to be investigated for latex allergy. This is simething that can be life threatening. Allergies can develop at any time due to repeated exposure. Hospials need to know when patients are allergic to latex so that latex free equipment is used.

my DH has a latex allergy we think, but we just switched to using latex-free condoms and bought a dishwasher and haven't given it much consideration since. is it worth him going to the doc's for a diagnosis... you've got me a wee bit worried in case something happens in the future.

Im also allergic to latex,ie balloons, condoms, rubber gloves etc.Piriton works for me if I get a reaction but to be honest I avoid anything rubbery like the plague now lol

Report
latexlady · 15/10/2006 16:35

just rubbed a balloon on the bendy side of my elbow if that makes sense.....nothing. Did not think I had a problem with balloons.....
Suppose that was a potentially silly thing to do

Im sorry but I am ROFL at Haunted's......

"Me, I'm am! I developed a latex allergy after years of wearing them for work"

I am too. The latex free ones aren't much better though IME so I wondered whether the lubricant they used was also an issue...? Maybe the same for you?
