Hello I'm new to mumsnet and would really love some advice. My 17 month old daughter M has a really awful rash around the nappy area, basically all the way up to the top and now spreading down her thighs. I have tried different nappies including the ones that don't contain the 'gel', but it's getting worse! Do you think cloth nappies could help? Or maybe it could be a food allergy..? Doctors/health visitor prescribed steriod cream but it always comes back much worse. Tried aveeno, emolliant cream, sudocrem....help!

My dd was the same, tried everything then my nan told me to use zinc and castor oil cream, I thought it was old fashioned useless stuff but it is a miracle worker! My dd's was due to the fact that her wee is very acidic apparently so I just make sure she drinks plenty. Hope this helps

Thanks but I've tried Zinc and castor oil and it made no difference. Will try giving her more water though...x

Snap salmother, we have tried sudocream, camilsan, in fact all of them. Mn said to try strongly brewed (cooled) camomille tea to wash the area in with cotton wool instead of wet wipes, and bicarb of soda in the bath water. So trying all of that to see if that will work.

Yes I use a combination of both, doesn't seem to make much difference.

I asked the pharmacist for advice yesterday and she said if it doesn't clear soon, to take him to drs for some fungal cream in case it's an infection.

My daugher (13 months) has pretty bad eczema, but never around the nappy area, but a couple of weeks ago had nappy rash that just got worse and wouldn't go away, and the skin was starting to weep. I tried every nappy cream under the sun and even canasten as I thought it might be thrush. I went to my gp in the end and she said it was infected eczema - she prescribed Dactacort which helped. I think it has an antibiotic and hydracortizone in it. Might be worth seeing your GP as I wish I had gone sooner (but as her she had never had eczema on her bottom before it didn't occur to me that that's what it was).

I took her to the doctor a few days ago and she too prescribed Daktocort - said it was a fungal infection...seems to be improving, just hope it doesn't come back!
