Allergies and intolerances

Has anyone ever made Flapjacks without the butter but with a substitute like oil or non-dairy butter?

Ds has a child in his class who is milk, egg, nut and gluten allergic. They will probably share a party and I may attempt to make a non milk/egg/flour cake but I'll have to put my thinking cap on for one.

In the meantime, I wanted to think of a 'treat' thing that was OK for him and would still taste alright.

So I was thinking of trying the flapjacks with either that soya spread stuff or oil (though that may be rank!!). Has anyone tried this before?

My DD has milk, egg, wheat, nut and soya allergy and I found a special cake mix at Waitrose that I'm going to use for her birthday cake.

As for flapjacks, I use a sunflower spread to replace the butter and it works quite well.

I make them with dairy free margarine. Just substitute in your normal recipe. They work just fine.

I've made flapjacks using Pure - the olive oil spread. They were OK. (But didn't taste quite as lovely and buttery).

Could you substitute rice crispies for oats? Might be a bit gooey as they're not as absorbent, iykwim!

thanks - hairy, he has some gluten free oat stuff that he eats!

yeah why not make rice crispie cakes instead?
are you sure he is definitely gluten free not just wheat free? because oats do have gluten in them so it seems unlikely that he'd eat them

yes he is definitely gluten free - the oat stuff isn't exactly like oats (the way we would think of them) but some sort of gluten free 'stuff' that they use where we would use oats

I'm not sure Rice Krispies are gluten free

think I will nip into Sainsburys and Waitrose over the next few days and have a look in their 'free-from' aisles and see what they have!

Because dd has outgrown her allergies, I don't have to buy special food any more but I gather from friends that the range of 'free-from' foods has really improved!

My mum found a good eggless cakes website. Will include link here. That pure spead is good. The yellow one is better than the green one for baking. They have allergy recipes on their website too.

eggless cakes website

pure spreads website

just had a look on kellogs website. rice crispies do contain barley malt extract and barley does ccontain gluten so not sure on that one. i have no idea if the malt extract still contains gluten iyswim?
it would also depend how intolerant he is.
supermarket own brands may not have that ingredient though so it's worth a look.
or maybe cornflake cakes?

Just a thought, Biona Organic Rice Cakes appear to be Gluten free, perhaps those could be crushed up, mixed with golden syrup, and a little soya spread.
