Constipation sign of allergy in baby?

So dd1 was very cow milk protein intolerant/allergic although it was not formally tested or diagnosed - she screamed, threw up loads every feed, red raw bottom, mucous poo, eczema etc until I cut all dairy out if my diet. Didn't sleep more than 2 hours until she was 2 so I suspect there was more, but we coped.

Anyway dd2 slept , no eczema etc so kept dairy in my diet until weaning, when she suddenly started getting colicky and throwing up. So cut dairy out if her diet (not mine) and it improved. But she's constipated. Cries in pain at every attempt at a poo, and often is unsuccessful. Horrible to see.

Have tried prunes, more water, tummy massage, and orange juice and nothing has worked, just got some lactulose on the advice of the pharmacist to try.

But before I try that I suddenly wondered if it could be the dairy - do I need to cut it out again? (Still breadtfeed,) I haven't been to the gp as he was so sceptical with dd1 and anywY I fixed it and worked it out myself.

Any advice?

Yes dairy can make them constipated. Dr. Thompson has some info here explaining it. Does she have a lot of soy? There a big cross over with cows milk and soy protein allergies that could do it too.

Really helpful link, thank you.

We don't eat a lot of soy now, but I did when dd1 had her dairy issue - which may account for why her sleep continued to be so poor, although her eczema, reflux, mucousy diarrhoea had all improved.

And I'm glad I read that as I was just about to ( as in this minute) go out and buy soya milk for me to replace dairy! Will but almond milk instead... Smile
