Allergies and intolerances

possible milk allergy in six month baby

My dd was ebf from birth, and when we first tried to give her formula at three months it all came back up again. My diet is dairy free as I'm allergic.

We've been giving her bottles recently as I'm weaning her off breastmilk as I have a operation in six weeks. At first, she was ok with the odd bottle, but she started to get a runny nose and a red rash around her mouth. At six months I gave her two meals with a bit of cream cheese in, and we again had really violent vomiting. The more bottles we gave her the worse her skin. She already had eczema.

A friend gave me a spare tin of nutramigen. After three days of that her skin is clear, no sickness and no running nose. And much better sleep!

I'm pretty sure she had a milk allergy, but what's next? I'm thinking I should make a gp appointment, as I can't afford to buy the formula myself.

I've tried her on wheat and she's been fine. I'm nervous about trying eggs and nuts but I should dowhilst still breastfeeding I guess.

That does sound like an allergy. Speak to your gp for a referral for allergy tests and prescription formula.
I personally wouldn't try eggs or nuts until you've had some testing of at least discussed with your gp. I hadn't heard that breastfeeding offers any protection against developing allergies or the nature of the reaction (but I may be wrong) .

It sounds fairly conclusive but I'm not an expert. Odd that if you are dairy free, and she is ebf that her skin has cleared up too?

No eggs or nuts until over 12 months with an allergic baby was the advice I was given.

I suspect my DD has a CMPI so I went to GP who has referred us to an allergy clinic. My GP was really helpful. My DN has symptoms much like you describe when having formula (rash around mouth, vomiting) and they have also been referred for allergy testing.

Yes that does sound fairly conclusive.

Ask GP for a referral to an allergy pediatrician so that they can do tests for further allergies, and ask him to prescribe the specialised formula in the meanwhile. I would keep away from egg, soya and nuts too till your LO is tested.

ILove, don't worry I felt like that too before my DS was diagnosed.

Thanks change :) realised I have actually been there every week for the last couple of months!

Anyway, we have a prescription for nutramigen :) after we come back from holiday we're to try introducing milk again slowly. If the same things happens he'll refer us to the dietician.
