Allergies and intolerances

worried about introducing peanut butter

Really struggling to wean my 9 month old. Still waiting to see a dietician, but he has reacted to dairy and eggs. What the he'll do you feed a kid who can't eat cheese or eggs?!

From what he does eat, I think smooth peanut butter would be a hit but I'm worried about a reaction.

Thinking about rubbing a bit on his skin before offering him some to eat.

Is his just a really stupid idea?

Also- when I was pregnant, I think I ate eggs every day, and cheese most days. Has this created the problem?

Don't blame yourself, allergy is very common in babies and toddlers.

You will only know until you test it. My DD is allergic to dairy, egg, soya and wheat but is fine with nuts.

She was tested with skin prick test for all the main nuts, and then I introduced hazelnuts, cashews, almonds and finally the dreaded peanuts. She was fine thankfully.

There is a way to do the testing at home. It is mentioned in prof branstoff's book 'the complete guide to food allergy and intolerance'. I have the pics of the relevant pages, I could post it if you like.

If you're that worried just go and park in the hosipital car park and hand him a peanut butter sandwich, better safe than sorry!

Your diet during pregnancy is very unlikely to have caused any problems at all!

I wouldn't try any more major allergens until you have seen a paediatric allergist personally - my son had an anaphylactic reaction to houmous (sesame) at 11 months which was quite terrifying, his second reaction to that needed an epipen and this was 3 years later. Its good to know what they are allergic to, its less stressful.

I used to make veggie casseroles, chicken and veg casseroles, fish pies etc when weaning all dairy and egg free, put the tiny pasta shapes in the casseroles, batch freeze them in small pots and get them heated up if we were going out.

my son is also allergic to the things i ate in pregnancy, but you can't beat yourself up about it regardless of what you ate - if they are going to get an allergy there isn't anything you can do about it.

I had an awful pregnancy - sick for the nine months , lost loads of weight . My consultant said eat dairy ... when I could face anything to eat I tried to eat dairy rich food . (I am normally a vegan btw ).
Dd has a severe allergy to CMP .
Do I blame myself ? No . Would I do it differently next time? Yes .
