Allergies and intolerances

6 month old intolerant to natural sugar??

Hello. My 6 month old daughter is lactose intolerant and is prescribed lactose free formula by the doctors. I have recently started to wean her, making my own foods up...fruit and veg purees etc.
since I have been weaning she seems to have gotten the nasty cough back that she had before she went onto lactose free formula which got me thinking could she be intolerant to the natural sugars in the fruit?
Probably being a paranoid mummy but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Don't know on that one sorry. Have you tried a couple of days without solids to see if the cough clears?

As far as I know, lactose wont cause a cough.

Lactose is the sugar that we digest in our stomach. Some cannot digest that sugar, giving the, stomach ache and runny tummies.

A cough may be associated with allergies. But again it isnt an allergy to lactose (or fructose) but the proteins.

OHfor ... I get a cough from lactose. I avoid milk = no cough.

OP - I have not come across anyone being intollerant to fruit sugar linked to their lactose intollerance, but that doesn't mean its not possible. Its going to be difficult to cut it out though because there are natural sugars in lots of things.

Mistle you avoid milk? So you also avoid lactose free milk?

I am fine on lactose free milk - I have had soya milk for years until I discovered that was an option.

I'm also lucky in that I can eat yoghurt and cheese (well most anyway) without reacting - the process of the fermentation to create the cheese or yoghurt changes the lactose sufficiently for me to cope with it.

Thank you everyone. I have stopped giving her fruit and the cough seems to have gotten better :-/ ?! I am goin to slowly introduce some fruit little at a time and see if it brings the coughing on again!
My niece is also lactose intolerant and she get a nasty cough when she has any dairy products aswel but as she gets older she knows she is goin to be affected and eats stuff she shouldn't anyway!
I will keep you posted on the fruit situation :-/

Ah well I had no idea about all this. I have very little knowlegde about lactose and gluten intolerances. My experiences are more allergies to proteins. And even then, Im constantly learning, its so complex!

Good luck OP. x
