Allergies and intolerances

Coming off Nutramigen

DS2 has been on Nutramigen for 2 years for gastric reflux/food intolerances, which is now more under control. And he now eats a normal-ish diet.

I have desperate to get him off Nutramigen for a while, and took the opportunity earlier this week when he had a D&V bug to cut it out. So he went cold turkey.

The thing is, I am not now worrying that he really is getting all the nutrients from his diet. He doesnt drink any other milk, but eats food containing milk/dairy. Should I be giving him calcium/vitamin drops?

I know I should contact his dietician, but I think she might criticise me for the suddenness of me stopping his 'milk'. So I'd like to get myself prepared first.

Any info would be appriciated. Thanks.

PS one small thing at the back of my mind - DS2 still has nasty nappies - I assume this is just post virus thing from his illness earlier in the week, but you dont think it could be a reaction to stopping the Nutramigen do you???

quick question is nutramigen the dairy free formula?

Nutramigen is gluten and lactose free.
Is he eating yoghurt, cheese etc? Cos if so can't see how his diet would be that low in calcium - my dd doesn't like to drink milk but loves yoghurts etc.
Minadex syrup has calcium and iron in and available to buy without prescription (also tastes quite nice) if you want to 'top him up'
Kids may get temporary lactose intolerance after D and V so now is maybe not the best time to get him off it.

My dd never had supplements. I use the Rice dream withadded calcium and try to make sure she has lots of other stuff. But I do agree its a bit of a worry.
Sallyrosie suggests Minadex. I think thats a good idea too.

Thanks for all the advice. I am actually wondering whether to leave it a week or so, then try him on a little cows milk to drink. He'll probably spit it at me, but I dont really want to get in to the habit of different milks unless I absolutely have to...

anyone else gone from Nutramigen on to cows milk??

My DS was on Nutramigen for ages and we cut him out cold turkey. He should be old enough for soya or goats milk now if you wanted him to have milk but TBH in our experience once ds managed to eat lactose in food form he was fine on a little milk every day.

I can't really remember properly but dd stopped nutramigen and wasn't drinking cow's milk. There are plenty of other places to get calcium (like purple sprouting broccoli, sardines etc.). Perhaps ask your dietician for a list of calcium containing food.

I also wouldn't try him on ANY dairy (as sally said) for at least a month after his D&V because that on its own can cause a temporary lactose intolerance.

Thanks - that is v helpful. Atm I am not givinghim anything new. He has been tolerating a yoghurt a day so he is still having that - and he has dairy in other foods too - eg cows milk in mash potato. And I no longer read food labels to avoid dairy etc. So it really is just a case of making sure he is getting all the calcium and other nutrients. (NB He had severe probs with soya as a young baby so I dont think I will ever give him soya milk to drink!)
