A&E today with DD allergic reaction

DD 5 yr has eczema. Today we made some bird feeders with pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed which was mostly sunflower seeds. Within minutes of making them she started itching severely and in the next moment she was covered in hives and her eyes were red with swollen eye lids. Never seen her like this before and was pretty scared that it would effect her breathing.
She's had steroids and is fine now and the hospital is recommending to the GP that she has patch test. She has had peanut butter before although it's ages ago. There was no reaction to it then so wondering if it could be the sunflower seeds. She's always itchy and it's more than just the eczema. Often she has a red slightly raised rash.
Tonight I've realised just how much sunflower is in her diet so I'm wondering if we've found the cause. Does anyone have any knowledge out experience of this type of allergy?
Thanks in advance.

Dont rule out peanuts. My son had yoghurt 10 times before he developed anaphylaxis to it.

See your GP to be referred for allergy testing.

Thank you for replying. Babybarrister - I will do that as my GP has been telling me for the last 3 years that allergy testing is a waste of time. Now that this has happened and the hospital have recommended it then surely he'll have to agree!

My Mum suggested that it could have been the pollen in the seeds. It's pretty clear it's at least one of those things so in a way I'm glad it's happened so that hopefully we can pinpoint something finally.
I'm frightened about the peanuts as I know this can be life threatening in some.

Be careful what your daughter eats if you think she is allergic to sunflowers. I suffer from anaphylaxis and sunflower oil is one of the many things I can't have. The oil is in lots of things particuarly bread crisps, frozen chips roast potatoes ect. I hope she is feeling better soon x

Most people who are allergic to sunflower seeds can have sunflower oil / sunflower spread as they are refined so contain no proteins.

You definitely need to get referred for skin prick & blood tests - good luck!

Sometimes it can be the second + times of contact that gives a reaction , agree don't rule out peanuts ! X

DS had been eating all the things he is allergic to for years before he had a reaction.
