First, can I just say that any such programmes should only be done under close medical supervision... also, we're in Luxembourg so what is offered here is different to the UK.
So... after 3 years of gradually increasing milk doses, today we are seeing the specialist because we have reached the end of the programme. DS1 (now 9) has 250 ml of straight cow's milk every day, having previously been anaphylactic.
The next step is apparently yoghurt and cheese and, shock horror, NORMAL FOOD!!!, and then we will have to calculate how much his milk intake has been each day and make it up to the 250 ml, in order to keep the tolerance.
It feels like such a momentous step, and I am so grateful to our specialist that I almost want to cry. DS1 started off below the threshold for reintroduction (he was reacting at a cumulative dose of 0.75 ml) but she thought we should try anyway and take it very slowly.
It has already changed our lives, as we have been able to loosen up a bit in the last couple of months and he was able to share our Christmas dessert and eat a few chocolates, and we're rediscovering the joys of cooking with butter - I was amazed to discover it has comparatively low levels of protein compared to milk, whereas yoghurt is a lot higher and cheese through the roof. Previously even small amounts would have sent DS1 to hospital.
Best of luck to everyone else facing allergies - and fingers crossed that such programmes will become more widespread.
