allergic reaction to oilatum junior?

Hi all

I posted last week about possible eczema on DS's face (20mo). He had a very dry chin and a few spots on his cheeks. I saw the GP who dismissed the spots as just spots really, compared them to milk spots in a baby. And the dy patches were healing ok so we put it down to dribble rash. Told me to just moisturise his face, no recomendation for specific cream.

So the dry patch has returned on his chin, not crusty but getting there. And he has a small very dry patch on his eyebrow. He is still quite spotty on one cheek.

I have been using oilatum on and off for ages with no reaction. This morning I put it on quite liberally over his whole forehad as the patch on his eyebrow had spread to the bridge of his nose. Within seconds the whole area where I had applied it had turned red and hot. Looked like he'd been slapped. It was very noticable as he is very pale skinned. I freaked and washed it off, took about half an hour to go completely.

Is this a common allergy? Am very anxious and sensitive about allergies as I have good skin but DH has battled eczema his whole life and his mother was incredibly anxious about it when he was small. These anxieties have transferred to me and I am obsessed by the thought DS might turn out the same way. He showed no signs of any allergy until at least 18 mo when these patches appeared.

What should I do next? Everyone close to me tells me I am nuts for worrying - if he went red from oilatum, stop using oilatum. simple. But I can't help seeing this as the start of something bigger :(

And what other cream should I try on his dry patches?

Thanks

My DS1 had a very similar reaction when he was 3mths, his face came up as blisters and was kind of oozing. I remember being distraught.

It was the aqueous cream we were told to put on (liberally) that caused it.

He had pretty bad eczema when he was a baby, at one point his head was really bad (& behind his ears) so I was using my own moisturiser, eight hour cream and savlon healing cream and we got over the worse with it. I bought some hydrocortisone (sp?) ready to use it if it got that bad again but it never has.
He's 3.5 now and he only gets it occasionally and it's never really bad, behind his knees, ear etc. My MIL was EXACTLY the same, she told me all the things her DC had as babies & it seems like she's just waiting for them to happen to mine Hmm...

Thats exactly the reaction my 20 month old has to oilatum cream! He has lots of allergies all resulting in in hives, but oilatum cream makes his skin very red and hot, across his eyebrows and forehead. It gets worse with each exposure to

I cant help further than that because I am as baffled as you are.

Interesting as I thought it couldn't possibly have any allergens in it. He doesn't appear to have any other contact allergies apart from possibly diprobase ... I haven't used it since then and I'm sure some of his spots have cleared up too... Problem is now they are so dry. I need to moisturise his cheeks...

ducks what do you use instead?

A cream called QV. Its really good. Its similar to Oilatum but not as thick. If you go on their website they'll send you a free sample.

The annoying thing is, Oilatum worked really well for his eczema!

I'm allergic to the cream base that they put in some of the eczema treatment things - so have to have the ointment instead.

Thanks. I tried Aveeno this morning and no reaction - but am not sure if it's ok for babies faces - it's the regular daily moisturising lotion, not face specific - is that ok?

Amazingly, having not used oilatum for just 24 hours, most of the spotty 'eczema' has cleared up and just very dry patches left. So it was probably that all along (I started using if a few weeks ago for a dry patch on his chin, then the rest flared up later. Didn't put 2 and 2 together...)

This link lists two ingredients of Oilatum Junior which may cause contact reactions - see 4.4. I've never got on with Oilatum products for myself or children's eczema. Aveeno seems to suit us, hope it keeps working for you.
