Skin prick tests

DS was diagnosed with a delayed allergy to milk, he also can't tolerate soya (well, he can have small amounts in bread) and had skin prick tests for cows milk and a few other things at 5 months.

His next appointment is Thursday where the consultant wants to challenge him - I don't see the point in the challenge with 4 reactions in 6 weeks (2 may contain traces, a restaurant putting butter on his veg and a change of ingredients).

He's had delayed reactions to pine nuts, hazelnuts & cashews + oral allergy syndrome to kiwi and fresh pineapple only.

I'm really worried that they're going to want to do skin pricks for these and that he's going to be absolutely histerical :(

Anyone's LO have them done around this age (13months) and how did they react to having it done?

I'm more worried about them being done than any reactions happening!!

just take plenty of things to keep him occupied/distracted during it. Are they just doing SPT or will they b doing food challenge too?

My DD's done food challenges (egg and milk) and we were asked whether she'd had a reaction in the past 3 months before they started each one - they wouldn't have proceeded if she had. She was admitted as an inpatient for the day in each case and I had to sign permission forms in advance. They take hours to do.

Skin prick tests didn't bother DD that much - and she did have them done around that age at each appointment we had. When she was tiny she had a lot of eczema so barely even noticed the itchiness of the skin prick reactions. As far as she was concerned, a friendly nurse drew some marks on her arm, put some drops of liquid by the marks and then used a metal thing to break the skin slightly. Some of them then turned into red, raised, itchy bumps after a few minutes.

We found that there was a lot of waiting around (weigh in, check details, see nurse, wait for reaction, see nurse, wait, see consultant, repeat...) so books/toys/games are a good idea.

My DS had the skin prick tests done for the 10 most common allergens at around 12m age. I was also worried about him getting hysterical but for some reason he didn't care at all!
Turns out he didn't have any allergies then and his eczema is under control normally now at 8y age. He has developed hay fever though in the last few years...

Thanks! i feel a little calmer now!

When the appointment was made his consultant said they'd challenge him then. That was before I'd come across his other allergies tho, he was 7 months and had only reacted to milk and soy.

At 5m they tested milk, egg white, egg yolk, cod & tuna. I think they might want to test other nuts & i also think he reacted to either dust or pets when at my dads as his breathing was bad there so don't know if they'll test that.

Still very nervous, but better thanks! he wasnt too bad the first time but they're easier to distract and not as strong at 5ms!!

They have lots of toys there as its in the paed department & they actually had another person come in to distract him with a toy while I held him and the nurse done it before. Ill take a couple of favourites though

Just to add to what's been said - both my LOs have had SPT at that age and at other various points and were completely unfazed... like they didn't feel it - they were more bothered amused by having pen all over their arm.

Getting the feeling being kept contained may be his biggest upset then!

No SPT, bloods instead was horrible but he soon forgot x
