My dd is 10months old and is currently on nutramigen aa. We saw the consultant today and he basically said to stop the nutramigen when she is a year old and try cows milk. If she has any problems then give her soya. Then he discharged her. I asked about goats milk but he said soya is better. What do you think? I have heard that soya is not that good. Any advice about what people did after would really help. Thank you

DS's dietician said soya too so we used to get the Cow & Gate infasoy powdered from Boots as this has all the calcium and vitamins etc. Try her on the occassional bit of dairy first (eg normal yoghurt) rather than just launching straight into cows milk to see if she has any reaction. Be warned it will upset her tummy when you change . . .

The dietician told us that little ones who react to cows milk could also react to soya as it is very similar my LG can tolerate soya in small amounts but milk makes her sick xxx

We avoid soya milk.
Like chlorjaynemummy - my child can only handle soya in small amounts.
We use oat milk.

You can get alpro soya which is formulated for 1 year olds if you don't fancy making up formula anymore.

Goats milk has the same protein in as cows milk (and sheeps milk), so if you can't tolerate cows then goats would be be no good - which is why the consultant said soya in that case.

I would go easy, try cooked milk in things first (eg biscuits/cakes), then more processed stuff like cheese, butter, before you launch into straight cows milk (and then a little at first). Give it a few days at each stage.

Ps I'm guessing the reaction is not anaphylactic type? Otherwise you shouldn't be trying it at home!

I would check out the toddler soya milk - I am sure I heard somewhere that is very high in sugar (probably heard it on here).

When I say check out - I mean check the nutrients not check it out in a cool way..

I think it's about 50% of cmp allergy sufferers who are also allergic to soya. Soya is the easiest and most widespread alternative (desserts, yogurts as well as milks), so definitely worth trying.

The alternatives like oat milk, rice milk, nut milks, are not suitable for under 2 year olds (as is soya milk, apart from the special alpro 1 year old milk I mentioned).

I think most formulas are pretty high in sugar too! (as is breastmilk from what I remember....Grin)

Thank you everyone for your replies. What she suffers with is eczema, explosive poos and a crampy tummy. I have read that goats milk is better than cows so that's why thinking about that. The thing with soya is that it's too sugary and also I've read something about hormones. But then again that's what you get with googling! Smile

Kara coconut milk is also a good alternative.

Alpro junior plus is especially formulated for 1-3 my dd loves it.

Do you know if your child cannot have milk because of CMP, lactose or both?

I think - and don't quote me Smile - that the excess oestrogen in soya is potentially a problem for boys, less so for girls (which is one of the reasons we chose soya for our girls after age 2). Tbh, there are potential problems with them all, even cows milk, so it's a matter of the least worst option really, together with a varied and balanced diet.

My dd is now 21 months and I'm still trying to wean her on to cows milk.
We were advised to start with cakes and biscuits that have baked milk in them. Dd can handle that. Then hard cheese, like cheddar. That is ok too. Then yoghurt, then cooking with cows milk in sauces before finally drinking milk.
My dd still can't tolerate yoghurt yet - sore tummies and terrible nappies. I was told to try again every 6 months or so as she may yet grow out of it all together.
We had to avoid soy until a year in case she had a reaction to that but now she eats soy yoghurts (they are delicious!) and I cook with soy milk.
It is more difficult trying to explain to nursery what she can/can't have but I'm hopeful that she'll grow out of it completely at some point.
Good luck

She hasn't been tested but the dr thinks its the milder version which is I think the protein bit in the milk. It will probably be trial and error with which milk suits her. We have just got her eczema under control and I'm afraid of that flaring up because when it does it effects her face badly.

Oat milk is fine for a one year old, you can buy a calcium enhanced version as well.
