Allergies and intolerances

Painful weeing after Piriton- anyone else?

DD has had this side effect twice after having Piriton (chlorphenamine maleate).

She's 2, so big enough to tell us what is wrong. We took her to GP, thinking they had to record side effects, and hoping she'd prescribe an alternative but she talked right over me, checked DDs ears and prescribed antibiotics for an ear infection!

Has anyone experienced this problem with Piriton or Allerief or know if there's an alternative medication for this age?

GPs seem pretty dismissive of the issue of allergies if it's not immediate rashy type, and even once referred, the allergy doctor at hospital was the same. Pin prick testing was negative within the time but dairy test was red by the time we got to the car ten mins later.

I'd recommend dropping into a Pharmacy - they will be best set to help you on this as Piriton is an OTC medicine, and they will have a lot more knowledge about these sorts of medicines.

Unfortunately some GPs seem to think that this sort of thing is below them and they should be doing something more useful with their time (in their eyes!) See a different GP next time - the one you saw doesn't sound great!

Hope your DD is feeling better soon.

Thanks, will see what they say at pharmacy. The GP issue is partly from the fact that we always end up on an emergency appt when GP is due to go on lunch! There is only on GP there that I really trust and she is harder to get appointments with. Will be going back about allergy issues as it's hard with nursery raising eyebrows at us.

Can't blame them as we sometimes doubt it ourselves but several trials at home and we're 90% sure.
