Accidentally had milk - bf a dairy allergic baby

As the title says - took two mouthfuls of tea the other day before realising it was DH's - with milk in it.

DD2, 16 months is allergic to dairy and is still breastfed. Last night & today she has been cranky, windy and seems to have stomach cramps - some of the symptoms from before we realised the allergy.

What do I do? Keep feeding even though it could be causing the problem? Give some antihistamine even though it isn't a sudden reaction? She wakes every two hours overnight and feeds to sleep - refusing would lead to total melt down, and she won't take a bottle at that stage - but if it's making her feel miserable???

Help. Please Hmm

She's 16 months so I'm assuming is well on solids? I would express off as much milk and you can and dump it. Then bf as you normally would. She'll be getting most of her calories from food , so one day with a smaller amount of milk wont hurt.I'd also give her some antihistamine.

Yes, she's certainly getting plenty of solids Grin

She only feeds once during the day (nap time, so if she happens to fall asleep while we are out, she doesn't feed at all, and can go 12 hours without a feed). It's night time that's the issue, there's no way I can reduce that at the moment (we have visitors so I'm not willing to inflict screaming on everyone all night).

I'll try to express some tomorrow morning (night time here), and try to arrange for us to be out at naptime so she gets the full 12 hours without a feed.

Any idea how long it would take to be out of my system completely?

No she'll be fine, don't bother wasting your milk. It was two mouthfuls of tea, which is 90% water. You'll only taken in the tiniest amount of CMP, very little of which would have made its way into your supply. It's great that you're so vigilant but you don't need to worry. The merest ingestion you've had just is not enough to cause a histaminic reaction, particularly when you mention it was several days ago. Just carry on as normal. Even if it has caused an immune response the inflammation will be in its way down now.

My 8 month old DS is allergic to milk, I'm breastfeeding him and still eat dairy myself. He doesn't react to it. My GP told me not to give it up as what reaches the baby through the breast milk is filtered and not likely to cause a problem.

Sorry, but that's bollocks. My DS screamed, arched his back and pulled off when bfing him before we realised that it was due to allergies. Once I cut out everything he was allergic to he was fine. We went through a horrible time because my GP was similarly clueless and was insisting it was reflux.

I found out DS was allergic to milk at 1 year, I had breast fed and eaten dairy with no problems what so ever. Not bollocks just different.

I'm talking about what the GP said, not Cydonia saying her DC didn't have a problem with it, sorry if it came across that way.

"GPs know a little about everything, but a lot about nothing"

Those words came from a friend of mine who is a micro biologists, and it is so true!

You're probably right Trixy, she wasn't really interested, straight away just said she'd refer him to the allergy clinic, which had a 2 month waiting list. In the meantime my advice was ' just keep breastfeeding '
I had other HCP telling me I could try powdered formula ( DS had a reaction to a carton of ready to drink stuff, or try him with a bit of yoghurt if I didn't think he was getting enough milk!!
