Allergies and intolerances

the return of the green poo...

Hi, would appreciate any advice please. DS is 4.5 months and have eliminated dairy and soy since he was 3 months and the green mucus poo with blood disappeared. However it has returned this week and if anything is now worse... I keep a food dairy and cant find any correlation between foods and bad nappies. Has anyone found that after eliminating foods for a while a 'slip up' (no idea what it might be...) can cause more severe reactions that last a lot longer? Or could he now be reacting to another food group? If the latter what would you eliminate next?

Thanks for any advice, I really thought i had it sussed and now am back to square one again :(

Hi clagges... Keep up the food diary; it might become clear later. I've been dairy free with DS2 but recently discovered that egg also does it for him (i don't eat egg often, and it's usually 'in' something, so i didn't really notice it before). I think sesame might have done something too... You may find that it's just something 'new' that you hadn't realised.

My DS2 is 9mo now and only recently finally got referral to allergy specialist; i hope you're able to get faster help than us. We've done the skin prick test - which is where we discovered the eggs (and, sadly, nuts)... if you can get that done, it's a great start. It doesn't show the non-immediate reactions though (you could get a 'negative' in the skin prick test, but still have problems with a delayed reaction), but it might help.

Best of luck

thanks for your advice, we have seen an allergy specialist already but all came back negative but I think is quite common even if still reacting to the foods? Shall keep up with the diary and go back to basics for a while, I think it might be maple syrup though had no clue that could cause a reaction, ah well!

From the symptoms you describe, sounds like intolerance (or possibly non-Ige allergy) and yes, in these cases reactions to 'slip ups' or reintroduction can be worse than the original symptoms. My DD is coeliac and since going gluten free, if she does accidentally eat gluten, her symptoms are far more severe and much quicker than they were before she was diagnosed.

You would be amazed at the things children can have an intollerance to, with my son it is potato starch. It took a while to discover as it is used as a thickner in some brands but not others. DS can eat some brands of sausage but not others, he can eat Birds eye chicken dippers but not chicken nuggets from Mc donalds (took a while to get Granny to believe that one). you need to look at the food he is getting on the days with the green poo and check everything that is in them.
