Is that the same as "Two Years Before the Mast" by Richard Dana? If so I remember reading it years ago and enjoying it. Incidentally, it's available as a free (and entirely legal) download from here.

I found this book in the loft, glanced at it and then could hardly put it down. It is a bit old fashioned in places and not very PC but it is good yarn as my late Grandpa would have said. Well worth a go.
