Understanding racism

I got into watching some stuff about the experiment by Jane Elliott last night. It seems very relevant to some conversations we have been having about transracial adoption and what it may mean to experience racism through being part of a multi racial family etc. I must emphasis I am not a transracial adopter, I am white and this is stuff I just find very interesting. It is relevant to me as a person in general but not as an adopter in particular.

The original experiment about racism happened after the assassination of Martin Luther King. It was with school kids and went both ways, blue-eyed on top one day and brown-eyed on top the next.

I am not defending the experiment. I can see it has its critics but I do think it is fascinating.

You can watch more about the experiment. //www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeK759FF84s

Please be aware it contains the 'N' word, it was filmed a long time ago.

The experiment is still being done. You can watch more and I found this more disturbing - not sure why with young adults instead of kids! - at //www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pv8mCHbOrs Some of the things mentioned are quite disturbing, although I had heard about them before, it is always good to warn people.

Anyway I felt this does give a really simple introduction to what it might be like to experience racism, for people who might find it hard to imagine.

I watched this, it is brilliant

Would welcome talking about this and especially if anyone, who has experienced racism, could give their perspective, please. I do think this may be relevant to adoption in some cases.

Should say we did seriously consider a mixed heritage child so we have thought this through but for us that particular mixed heritage link did not work out.
