I think they do, under the new code, but you really need an expert... :)

Sorry, I meant to say it might be worth asking on the education boards where the experts are often to be found.

I have been told by friend with adopted dc that yes, they have priority right until the end of school, even if they were adopted as babies.

Yes they do get preference.

If child was in care prior to adoption then the new ruling applies.
The new criteria on direct gov site is any LA or adopted child.

This applies to primary and secondary education both state run and academy schools.

I believe it applies to previously looked after children who were adopted after 2005.

I adopted in 2006 so I believe my DCs would have got preference at our local oversubscribed school ( they got in anyway as we live slap bang in the centre of catchment.)

Mine were adopted as babies and they will get preference when it's time to apply for secondary school.

Angels is right, adopted children get priority if they were in the care of a Welsh or English council/LA before adoption, and if the adoption was finalised on or after 30th December 2005

Thank you. Very helpful! She's being bullied and at the very least it will help her get into another primary school if its not resolved. Complaint is escalating upward from Governors to LA etc now as they've split the girls up to the detriment of the bullied one :(

Answered on your other thread.
briefly: they get priority for admissions, nothing else special, but a good school should take background into consideration and provide appropriate support.
(have to be adopted from care in UK, not intercountry adoption).

It will not force a space for her in another school, only move her to the top of the waiting list if there is no vacancy.

If you are not getting any joy with your local authority or the school, get your post-adoption team to step in on your behalf - we found this very useful when we were switching schools in an oversubscribed area. Mind you, we, like you, had very good reasons for needing to switch schools and the input from our team helped very much.

There is no team or involvement any mor, they ran like the wind the day the adoption was finalised. Poor sausage. Her mum is hoping to hear about a class re shuffle for next year, luckily it's a 2 form intake school. As long as she's separated from the bully, she will stay at the school as she has other friends and is mostly happy.
Thanks though, I do keep passing on snippets

I have a dd from straight surrogacy who is unscathed by anything to date, she is 14 now, but adopted and differently to the norm achieved children can absolutely need extra support forever.
For all I know, dd may have an epiphany when she has a family of her own, worries me a bit.

Mrsgiggles Unless you live in Scotland/NI in which case I don't know the relevent laws, the adoption course SW's are misinformed. There's no time limit on school admission's preferance as long as you adopted after 2005 and adopt from an English or Welsh authority. Your child will get priority from the moment they are placed with you (as LAC), through their first primary school admission till their final school change whether that's for Year 7 or Year 11 or whenever :)
