My husband and I have booked ourselves in for our adoption medicals but have been told by our G.P. that they will cost £85 each! Does anyone know if we actually have to pay any of this amount or if our adoption team/county council will subsidise it?

Hi there

I am with an L.A and I have been told that they will re-imburse me the cost of the medical. I tried to book an appointment and was told to fill my part of the form in and take it for the doctor to review, if he felt he needed to see me he would otherwise he will just fill it in and the nurse can do my weight, height and bP and for that service (or lack of it) will cost me£70!

My LA paid too - the GP invoiced them direct. But I have heard of others having to pay their own fees.

Thank you for your help. I think I will get back in touch with our social worker. £170 for both of us is such a big amount to pay for something that we are being told to do by the L.A. I don't want to seem unwilling and we have the money to pay for it but think I'll still push my luck and ask!

Perfectly reasonable to ask. Especially as you may have to repeat it later - I think they clock out after a year.

Also our GP would not send the forms until he had the money in his hot little hand!

We're with a LA, and it's been clear from the start that we have to pay for these ourselves - my husband had an early medical, and now has to have a follow up medical, which costs about £25, which the LA will reimburse us for.

Oh, and it took my doctor's six weeks to give me an appointment!

We have just been 'taken on' by our LA in this process and one of the first thing they wanted to make sure we understood was that we have to cover the cost of the medical. Perhaps it depends on your area whether or not you have to pay? We're in Hertfordshire.

It does depend on area, but also on whether you're doing a domestic or an international adoption. Adorabella - You are doing an international adoption I think, in which case you'll be expected to pay for everything wherever you are, whereas a good number of domestic applicants can expect their LA to cover medical costs. Although some domestics do have to pay, especially since budgets have been cut, SS will be passing on the costs to others wherever possible in manyy cases!!

My LA paid for all my medicals though, so it's worth asking

We have had 8 adoption medicals our GP said no charge it may have been because we were adopting special needs.

My adoption was intercountry and I was firmly told to pay by SS. My doctor surgery however declined to charge me which I thought was inefficient nice of them

Our lovely GP refused to take payment for our medicals. He said that he had never charged anyone for an adoption medical, as he thought it was wrong that we should pay - what a star!

Our GP was reimbursed direct by the LA we used

We had to pay for our medicals. We are adopting via Barnados.

It really depends on your GP. Ours has been very generous. We had 2 medicals for 2 adoptions. He never charged us a penny.
He told hubby he felt for us and was full of admiration for us at how we had dealt with miscarriage's and losses over the years. So sweet.

Good luck with the medicals. I'm sure it will all go well.
Look forward to your new family.
It's a dream come true. Grin

Hi, ours was paid by our LA too. I'm a little shocked that some people were charged.

Equally are you expected to pay for your CRB check? Again we were not.

Very heartwarming to hear of GPs with hearts!

Just realised this post orginated some time ago - hope it went well ESBay.

We've just been quoted £172 per HOUR! (apparently it'll take longer than an hour). Seriously?!

Adopting through Barnados and they are on the case!
