When asked what she would like, parents had no idea!
Likes "weird" music they said.

Any better ideas than a £20 note in a card?

art supplies, they cost a fortune and WHSmith has some on special offer.

DOn't buy WHSmith art supplies, if you want to get her some go to a proper art shop. WHSmith ones, unless you know what you're looking for, are arse.

(sorry Happy)

Nirvana t-shirt

otherwise, good brushes are fecking expensive - voucher for local art shop would have been my present of choice at her age.

do you know what sort of music?

let me know what she's into - i'm sure I can help with an eclectic music selection.

I would say no, not if no one knows her better than saying she likes "weird" music.

Give her the £20. She can choose to buy her own choice of art supplies, or some weird music if she likes, then

I'd go with cash or an art shop voucher.. it's really important to actually choose your own brushes/ materials.

I know about the art supplies, DH was deputed to buy proper pencils for another niece (ie Lakeland) and came back with WH Smith ones, grr. At least she's only 11.

do young people still listen to CD's these days or is it all downloads?

IMovetheStars I love that album! I think I will go for it depending on whether I've x posted with any better ideas.

it is a superb album. if she's an arty grungy type (and not too emo) then she'll love it.

gah.. substandard art supplies used to piss me off. cost the same money but just not the same.

good set of excellent chalks or oil pastels would go down a treat though, they wear out quickly and they;re lovely things to get.

Thanks a lot .

is it poss to have a chat with her and just casually ask her what sort of stuff she really likes these days? if so great and also keep the chats going coz at least that way you'll have got to know her better (and she you) and then prezzie buying won't be a problem in the future.

What could be better than £20?

My eldest daughter is an art student and uses winsor and newton and daler rowney for her paints/pastels and other supplies, wh smith sometimes have these in stock.

LOL Hetherine, then they can hold hands and know that they are the best aunt/niece friends ever and can always confide in each other and plait each other's hair

Art vouchers my vote. I LOVE the smell in art shops

A really nice sketchbook - leather bound maybe.

Um, she may not be a "fine art" student though, is she doing new media/digital art?, so I would not get her art supplies unless you are sure what sort of art she does. I am telling you, no 18 girl would sniff at £20 to spend in the Top Shop sale, esp on pOxford Street.

Before I opened the thread, just on the title, my initial reaction was "Vodka".

I like the idea of buying her some music - but not something contemporary. Something 18 yo art students would have listened to when we were 18 (though I was never an art student). Something like Bauhaus. Although Siouxsie might be better. £5 on Amazon and free delivery. And some (or one dearer) nice brushes (also Amazon).
