If so, how come he doesn't do it himself?

In fact I have made a pact not to purchase A SINGLE present next year, or advise anyone else what they could buy. Fed up with the whole bloody thing

Ditto here

If I dont buy them then no one will get anything.

He says he is too busy - but not busy enough to go out to three Xmas do's this week !

To be fair, I enjoy buying in all the Christmas gifts for everyone we buy for. I guess because the gifts are from both of us and not just him. I know MIL would much prefer it if DH alone bought her gift, I think she is the only one who would have any resentment towards me doing the gift buying. The gift is not 'as special' if it is from us both, rather than just him IYKWIM.

It's all so precious isn't it

Actually I will buy for our 3 but will not tell anyone else anything. its exhausting and I;m grumpy

MarthaFarquhar · 13/12/2009 16:56

really though - why and how does this happen?

my DH is well educated and has a responsible job which requires him to be organised and pro-active.

I am a WOHM with a preschooler, so don't have too much spare time. so why the fuck have I just spent the afternoon buying presents for his brother, his SIL, his aunt, and his grandma???

No don't - I don't even send cards to them when I send them to my family

After this afternoon I have drawn the line at writing cards.

I have bought him some though.

We write a list together and we both do the shopping.

He helps me with ideas for mine, I help him with ideas for his.

He does most of the wrapping as he is obsessive anal much better at it than me.

i dont have a husband/partner or whatever, but if i did i would like to think that i would be able to enjoy buying them christmas presents. after all, once you marry, they then become your family too, and i love buying presents for family. i used to buy for my ex dp's family, and enjoyed doing it because i thought of them as part of my family as well

yes because it got embarrasing when my family were opening nice presents, litle stocking fillas etc and his were opening a box of chocs or a bottle of wine.We tend to have both families over christmas day.

No Because he hasn't really got any.

I do the shopping for:
DP
DS
My parents
DPs parents
DPs sister
DPS brother
DPs sister in law.
My parents' pressies for me, DP, DS & sister(as they are old and can't mange Xmas shopping)

DP only has 1 present to buy (for me) - leaving it to the very last minute every year - and complaining bitterly each year about how much he hates Xmas shopping - and moaning about how difficult I am to buy for . I wouldn't care, but he always asks me for a 'wish list' each year, which I duly give him each November, and it always lists at least 15 things I would like (eg CDs, perfume, books, nothing extravagant).

Deep breaths ... large glass of wine for me when DS is in bed...

Do feel free to join me. Nowt like a glass of wine and a rant...

Some of them. This year, for example, he bought DCs' present for his mother, presents for his father and stepmother and for SIL1 and her husband. I did our present for his mother and for his aunt. Then we went out together to get presents for SIL2 and her partner. Some years I do more of it, some years he does more of it.

I have bought presents for everybody, family, teachers for three kids, secret Santas (including for his office).

Wrapped all

Done all cards

Given people that have asked ideas

And he grumbles about being skint. Yet he has the full time job and I have the part time job but have done it all...!!!

grrrrr

I used to, but I stopped. Now DH's family get crappy presents and his neices and nephews get money. I suspect that they blame me (as the woman in the marriage) for the crapness of the presents, but I can't muster up the energy to care.

Bran - you will be my muse. I shall stop this nonsense. Although the transition must be hard, with everyone wondering why they have got a tin of roses and some cava instead of a Booker nominee and some cashmere.

I can't be bothered with the nagging. Or the blind panic when he realises it's xmas and his family live at the other end of the country. And he's bought nothing.

This year I am buying my own present - I get something I like and don't have to look at his agonised face as I unwrap yet another useless panic buy.

I do not do birthdays though. That's a line too far. And I can pretend I didn't know it was their birthday. Xmas is more difficult...

birthdays not a problem - mainly because vouchers/cash are de rigueur.
but my family and his are both a bit sniffy about this at Christmas, and want to unwrap something tangible, the feckers.

but you are fortunate that you all have DCs
on DH's side no-one else has got round to procreating, so the adults all still bloody buy for each other.
