The only one I give a little gift to is the postman but that is because he is really fab, chatty and cheery. Usually give him a card and a bottle of wine. Don't have a cleaner etc but if I had a paper boy or girl, I'd tip them a couple of quid in a card.

So far it looks like the only people we all give something to if we have them is the cleaner and teachers. Tbh I think that's the way it should be. What's wrong with just wishing people a merry christmas. There's too much pressure these days to buy or make a present for everybody I think.

Sorry to hijack but we're having a loft conversion, due to finish just before Christmas. What would you suggest as a present for the builders (four of them) and electrician? We're going to be a bit strapped for cash by then.

Our lollipop lady used to leave a box by the road for her gifts at Christmas /Easter /end ofterm, and the teachers in the last school would just hand our preprinted thanks notes as you handed the gift over. This school is far nicer.

One year (rant arning) I senteach teacher a bar of choccy with a £5 Oxfam gift for something like books for schools (teachers) or emergency food for littlies (Nursery). One teacher wrote a lovely note, none of the others even handed over the regulation pre oprinted letter. Its not as if they'd have ever got more than the bar of G&B, so they didn'tlose and it'ssupposedly a Church school so it really wulne me up when everyone else got their notes and my boys none.

thedollshouse · 08/12/2009 09:56

No to all of them. I would give a small pressie to the teacher but there are so many teaching assistants that I have lost track.

I wouldn't even consider giving something to people at the doctors and dentists surgery. Why?

your child's nursery/primary/secondary teacher - yes

the binmen - no, there are 30 gazillion and leave the bins randomly around the street.

the lollipop person (if you walk to school and use one) - no

milkman (if you have one) - yes and this year it will be generous. He made it through to us on time through snow that was literally knee deep in places last winter. He is a hero.

hairdresser - no she is a friend and would be insulted.

postman - no because they decided it was too dangerous to make it through the snow for two whole weeks last winter. If an electric milk float can make it, the postman can.

doctor's surgery - lol - no!

dentist - no!

It did occur to me (pre-birth) to give the GP's surgery a box of homemade cakes/biscuits after DS was born, to show my appreciation (I seemed to be there all the bloody time). Ha! I obviously had inflated ideas of all the spare time I'd have with a newborn!

The local midwife unit did get a cake (NOT homemade) though...

How do you tip the binmen? Do you dash out when you see them coming? Or leave a card taped to the binlid?? And there are loads of them - would you tip the whole crew or what?

Am pissed off with the milkman because he lied about why he delivers our friday milk on wednesday night now. (long story)
