Christmas

Skylanders or Disney Infinity for 6 year old DS - and which starter pack?

We're thinking of getting a wii u at Christmas as a kind of family present and I was thinking of buying DS either the Disney infinity or skylanders starter pack, but not sure which he'd enjoy more? He knows a lot of the Disney characters, but he did enjoy playing skylanders at a friend's.

After that, not sure which starter pack to get - both are bringing out a new pack in time for Christmas at double the price of existing sets. There's only one Disney one out just now, but there seems to be a couple of skylanders ones already.

Any suggestions welcome - I know nothing about games!

Disney infinity is shit. They sell lots of characters but only three actual play worlds. Then you need all the characters to progress in the games. The game play seems simpler and more logical than skylanders but there isnt much to it.

Skylanders

I have a 7 year old boy and he is very meh about Disney where as him and his friends are much more interested in the Skylanders characters and create imaginative stories and backgrounds.

I would buy the Swap Force Starter Pack if you're on a budget but the new one would be better because Trap Force figures won't work with Swap Force but all the figures (however old) will work on Trap Force.
There's a lot of figures to choose from if you go for Swap Force. (You can use Giants, Swap Force, Spyro's Adventure) and the figures will be cheaper than Trap Force.

Don't bother with a Spyros Adventure or Giants Starter Pack

That's so useful, thanks! Seems a bit of a false economy to buy an older skylanders one then if it means new figures won't work.

Disney infinity is fab and the have more than three worlds we have five currently, plus they sell discs which can be used to change scenery or add tools which are about £3 so great pocket money treats 5 year old ds and 6 year old dd are hooked

Thanks NoUseForAname. Have yours tried skylanders at all? I do think the familiarity of Disney would appeal, but DS will be nearer 7 come Christmas and I am thinking skylanders might have longer appeal (especially if other boys in his class have them).

We have both, two boys, 5 and 9, Disney infinity is not played with much and not fun for them, Skylanders is a big hit though I do wish there wasn't such a huge advertising push behind the extra characters as they don't really add so much to the game. DS games are much better value but obviously without the big screen!!

Thanks everyone, all the comments much appreciated. I'm erring towards skylanders. I've just been reading up on the new starter pack and it sounds like something DS would enjoy.

We have Disney Infinity and the dcs love it. It's a pain on the Wii, as you can't access loads of other "worlds" but with a Wii U, you can, which really opens up the playing. Also, Disney Infinity 2 is coming out soon, which has all the Marvel Superhero characters (all the avengers, spiderman, stitch from lilo and stitch, and others). My dcs are really excited about that.

Dd has played sky landers at her friends house and didn't 'get' it, I think like you said disney is more familiar, ds is waiting for the marvel infinity2 to come out. When we bought it they had the choice between disney or sky landers and they chose disney they have had the choice to buy sky landers since and chose to buy more infinity figures instead - but I'm aware my kids may be the minority here!

Thanks for the pro-Disney comments ?? After reading around some more I do think he'd like skylanders and it would have more longevity for him. If he really wants Disney too after Christmas there's always his birthday!

Skylanders is v good. I have a 5 & 7 year old and I think it is more played with than disney infinity.
Now is a good time to pick up extra characters. Lots of sales on amazon and in Game. Personally I'd get the trap team starter pack but pick up the other skylander games second hand. They will continue the play once he finished trap team. Spyro's adventure is harder and v challenging. Game do second hand skylanders which can be good stocking stuffers.

My ds's 5&8 have disney infinity and skylanders.
They play with both equally I'd say. Disney infinity is good because as well as the normal game there's a toybox mode where you can make your own worlds to play in. My ds's love this, even my 11yo dd plays. They're really into Minecraft too so they toybox mode is similar to that b

The disney figures are lovely too.
