Ds will be starting school in September and I expect to see a big change in the things he likes by Christmas.

I have already got him a few bits like puzzles, but I want a few more ideas of small things he may like that he won't find babyish!!!

Dniece will also be starting school but will be nearly 5 at Christmas.

you can't go wrong with arts and crafts stuff and generic stuff

Lego... Mine are just starting to get into it age 4, and it will last them for aaaages as a 'played with' toy.

If you are expecting a big change in what he likes (and you would be right, there is a huge change in maturity and understanding and when they start school they become interested in what school friends have) why not wait until then? Put the money away now but wait and see what he is into and what is in the shops nearer the time.

Between now and next Christmas is about a 5th of his life!

Arts and crafts stuff would go down well. Maybe dress up stuff if you find some in the sales.

For your niece I would wait until she was in school to see if she gets into any trend from there. My dd started last year and is now obsessed with lalaloopsies - hence my nickname!

I love to hunt for bargains so I tend to shop throughout the year. I will still be buying things after hes started school.

Thanks for the ideas.

YY to lego (and k'nex/magnetix type things) - they'll play with that for years. I've only recently stopped treading on it in my 15yo DDs bedroom!

I'm going to make a little craft hamper for my 4 year old DC
A pencil case, twist able crayons and pencils. Some handwriting book, numbers books. All very 'grown up'

My daughter started reception last year and there was a noticeable change. However, lego and playmobil still VERY popular with boys and girls. Peppa pig phase replaced by Disney princesses , moshi monsters and Hello Kitty. Doc mcstuffins still popular. Still into dolls (shes only 4) but Barbies are becoming an interest. Crazes amongst boys are Angry Birds, Star wars, pirates and transformers.
