Does anyone go to the coast at Xmas?

I once read a tradition on here about going to the seaside on Christmas Eve and thought it sounded great. We're thinking of going to the North Yorkshire Coast on New Year's Day but worried everything will be closed and it'll be miserable!

Any thoughts? We can get a nice hotel etc..

Well I grew up on the coast so yes we quite often went for a walk on the beach at Christmas BUT I suspect touristy things in touristy places would be closed. My home town isn't that touristy out with the summer hols so we didn't expect anything to be open iyswim?

When we visit there at Christmas with the kids we still go for a walk though, , it's lovely :)

We always go to Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on New Years Day quite a few places are open and its lovely to get some serious fresh air.

We always go for a walk on a beach on new years day, somewhere on the South Coast, always find fish and chips.

That's encouraging! I can sniff out fish and chips I'm sure! I really want to blow the cobwebs off after Christmas and this seems perfect

We have been to Scarborough on Boxing Day - a walk on the beach followed by fish and chips was great. It was very cold though especially as I got very wet rescuing eighteen month old ds2 from a big wave.

We live by the sea so sometimes go for a walk along the prom, there will still be cafés etc open, but I suppose it depends where you want to go.

I always go to the beach on Christmas Eve. Have since I was 2, it's our odd family tradition! The chip counter is open and there is a lovely pub on the seafront for a pint after our walk. Perfect!

Yes we go on new years day if we are visiting my family & as long as you are wrapped up seriously snug with ear muffs it is very refreshing. My face always looks like I have had a facial, probably because the wind has stripped layers of dead cells off!

Wrap up warm in lots of layers & ear muffs as the wind is biting cold, take a picnic to eat in the car and a flask of hot tea/choc so you are sorted if everything is shut.

I've had fish and chips on the beach on Christmas Eve before.

Last year we spent New Years Day on a sheltered beach with high cliffs and south facing, it was really warm and a great day out.

We always go to Whitby on New Years Day for a fish and chip lunch then a pootle around for a couple of hours (except last year DH was in hospital so it was postponed until mid Feb).

I live on the coast and MIL lives by a beach of sorts in a pretty village. DH and I have a tradition if there at Xmas to go out for a walk after dinner sometimes its just the two of us, walks by the sea in the cold all wrapped up warm are seriously pleasurable!
