We finished it off tonight with some left overs. I enjoyed my dinner tonight far more than the last 2 days, probably because I didn't have to cook it, and also it was just us-no pressure!

I nearly forgot Dolly. It was at the back of the bottom oven minding its own business. It was only when a friend commented on how sweet the sprouts tasted that I shouted "The Red Cabbage!". I wouldn't mind but DD had already asked me if I had left anything lurking at the back of the ovens.

<lost the plot>

Twas very good though - and I may have some cold on a turkey sandwich later. <yum>

70Lisa it tasted even better today (possible because I remembered another ingredient in it-2 teaspoons do red currant jelly) and went down a storm with cold turkey. Maybe you will remember yours tomorrow! grin

grin Dolly I bought a Sainsburys Taste the Difference red cabbage dish.
Did all my timings - oven, hob, halogen oven, steamer, microwave for everything.

After dinner, went to put something in the fridge.

Check after 3-3 1/2 hours for a 6kg bird. Ours is 4 kg and we are doing it for 2 hours according to St Nigella.

We always have red cabbage for Christmas, but no spices or apples: boil cabbage, drain, add vinegar, sugar and salt. Cook over a low heat. Taste. Add more vinegar/sugar/salt according to taste.

I am doing the Delia one from the Internet. A bit confused as to why she says to layer it neatly and then stir it all up. Why bit just chuck it all in the pot (as I did)

Ooh thanks all. I got bogged down with making Nigella's pannettone christmas pud, which has not gone well, prepping the turkey and icing the Christmas cake. Will try out Dolly's recipe tomorrow.

Sorry, can't help on the turkey timings as I slow cook overnight in the bottom oven of the Aga. I would have guessed about 4 hours for a 6kg turkey, but I am shit at timiings.

That is why we always eat late.

Its a recipe ripped out of a magazine that I've had for years. Beware it sticking to the bottom of the saucepan, it need frequent stirring.

Also, I forgot to write it has 2 tablespoons of light muscavado sugar in it as well.

Mine is very similar to dolly but I use a cinnamon stick and star anise, and I do mine in the slow cooker for 4 hours or so

You can substitute cranberries for the apple, as well.

I've done as above but with cinnamon and ginger too.

I've just done one that was

one small red cabbage
one bramley apple
one onion chopped
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
100mls water
nutmeg
allspice
Cook in saucepan over medium heat for an hour.

I guess you can add any spice or herb that you fancy. In exchange, can you tell me how long/what temp to cook a 6kg turkey for please?!

I use Delia's braised red cabbage recipe, but add raisins and a bit more spice. If you google it's online.

I had some wonderful Red cabbage with sultanas and a spice over the summer holidays and want to cook it for tomorrow. I had googled and found a recipe with caraway or cumin seeds but can't find the bloody thing now. Does anyone have a fail safe red cabbage recipe pleeeeeese?
