Nintendo 3DS vs 3DS XL?

My 2 boys have asked for a 3DS between them for Xmas. I wasn't going to get one as they are getting skylanders stuff too and one already has a tatty old ds lite and the other has a dsi xl which is the one they both tend to use the most.

But I decided I'd get one when i saw the price had come down to 120 quid which I could afford. So I bought one whilst ignoring the "clearance" labels on them and trying to take no notice of the 3DS xl next to them which I had no idea even existed but were 50-60 quid dearer than the 3ds.

I considered that the 3DS will be fine as its the new games and the 3D novelty factor that they are after. But having got home I'm wondering if I should have paid the extra for the bigger screen size on the xl.

Is the screen too small on the 3DS really? They both love the DSi XL which has a much bigger screen than the ds lite - I just don't know how important screen size is important to them, not being a user of them myself.

Anyone got experience of both?

We brought a 3DS as an upgrade for our son. We brought games, charged it up etc then when we powered it up read the on screen safety warnings. At this point we repackaged and sent it back. DS still enjoys his DS!

The warnings from memory are .... don't use for more that 20mins, after 20 mins have a 30min? break, don't use when on the move, use will damage the eyes development of children under 7, use for prolonged periods will damage eye sight. May cause headaches and nausea.

I was a bit shocked that this info wasn't available in the adverts. It is if you google it.

Some people seam to get on well with them though, so I guess it's all a bit subjective.

you can switch the 3D off though and use it without 3D effect - neither of mine use the 3D function. Both mine have the 3DS and have never had the XL ones.

DS got a 3DS last Christmas and hated it. We traded it in at hmv for an iPod touch which he loves. Says the 3DS made his head hurt Sad

My eldest (9) has a touch. Apps/ games are really cheap. Many are 69p.

Dd1 (8) has a 3ds. She plays it with 3d off most of the time. There are quite a few games she wanted that were only available on 3ds.

Hmmm..... It's a bit worrying to read those sort of health warnings. I thought it was just headaches that they SOMETIMES caused in SOME people.

Well I won't be bothering with the more expensive version that's for sure!
