We are in NZ for xmas, fly out 23/12 and return 19/1, should I leave the decorations up or take them down the night before we fly??

The decorations will go up on Dec 1st as we are having Early Christmas on the 16th with my family but I don't want to upset the kids or loose momentum of the 'real' Christmas for the benefit of the In Laws after paying small fortune to arrive in time for Christmas day

We are not particularly superstitious and I don't mind putting the dec's away once we get back but then I don't want to invoke the wrath of an unseen entity if we miss the 12th day thingy (is that the superstition, dec's down by 12 days after Christmas???)

I would take them down before I go, it'd make me feel too miserable to come back to them.

We're going to Australia on 8 dec so aren't putting decorations up but were not having a Christmas here as such. In your case I'd go for minimal decorations but I can't decide whether to take them down or keep them up sorry! Could a lovely family member take them down for you if you don't put too many up?

I'd take them down before.

Take them down. Nothing worse than travelling home longhaul with stuff that has to be done when you get home. It takes me everyone I have to push the washing machine on and get bread out the freezer!

We went to Mexico last year for Xmas - took down all the decorations before we left - really didn't want to have to do it when we returned.
