She's 6 (7 in March). Quite able ie I don't want one of those vtec things but at the same time we have to assume it will get a few knocks iyswim!

we bought a proper camera because the vtech cameras are crap in terms of picture quality.

we have a canon powershot a470.

clearly it is not as (any where near as) durable

We got an adult camera up to our price range from Argos, along with rechargeable batteries and a nice big memory chip and a robust case.

DOn't bother with "kiddie" cruddy cameras. Just tell her she must have her hand through the wrist strap at all times which stops most drop accidents. And the fact she has a real grown up camera which actually does stuff and takes decent pictures will mean she will look after it, have faith in her pride & ability!

Children take fantastically good pics, nothing like adults take, I love to see them. So don't deprive yourself, make sure she has a really decent camera in your range so you enjoy her work.

DS1 is 5.5. He has a kiddie camera, but hasn't used it in ages - he always uses ours. Especially likes taking videos. He's not an especially careful child in general, but he's never done anything stupid with the camera - recently wandered round for a couple of hours at my sister's wedding taking photos with it.

Would agree with rechargeable batteries and a big memory card - he never wants to delete anything!

I've just bought dd1 (7 in January) a kodak playsport. It's a camcorder/camera. Had good reviews on Amazon.

She had a vtech camera a couple of years ago and the pictures were rubbish and it broke quickly.
