Christmas

What are you buying your 5 or 6 year old ds for Christmas?

I have bought some basic bits and pieces for ds for Christmas this year but not sure what to get him as a main present. What are this year's must haves for this age?

I'm not sure what the "must haves" are, but DS2 who is 6 has asked for a Lego truck, a pirate board game, a dinosaur jigsaw and some Terry Deary books about Romans, Egyptians and Vikings.

I am impressed your ds knows what he wants so early! Ds likes the idea of something from the Lego Atlantis range but I know he won't really play with it!

I have got ds some books from the book people Riven ... which he will love! Maybe I will go for something he can make as he doesn't seem to really play with toys much ...

He has had his eye on them for a while. He doesn't get bought an awful lot of stuff apart from at birthdays and Christmas, so tends to store up a list.

My ds' birthday isnt long after christmas so he tends to get stuff at the same time of year. If you ask him what he wants he will quite happily go through the argos catalogue and tell you pretty much everything but I know in reality he wouldn't play with much of it. I like to buy something that he will get plenty of use from rather than a "fad" toy ie. Ben 10 etc.

Lego Atlantis is FAB. My ds is 7 but has finally got into his lego and really needs more. I'm hoping the sainsburies half price toy sale (which starts on Wed) will have some!

Or star wars lego?

The thing with lego is that he makes up the smaller models, leaves them there and then pulls them apart ... never to be made again! Seems such a waste .... That said I have some for his stocking both Star Wars and Lego Racers from the Mirror offers.

I've stopped buying mine (I also have another DS who is 8) the fancy over hyped sets as they always pull them to bits and they end up jumbled in big boxes.

The truck I bought is this one I think that should survive as he likes his lorries.

A skateboard although I'm not sure where to get one from or what type.

The starter boxes of lego have been fab - I think there's a big vehicles and big building box in Argos. We have the vehicle one and it's been used a lot.

oooh a skateboard .. I wonder if he has the balance for one? I did wonder about a pogo stick - I had one when I was young but I think I was older than that.

So far we've got him the Playmobil Police Headquarters and a book on space. We got the Playmobil from ToysrUs and it came with the Fire Chief's Car.

His birthday is in the spring so we tend to buy him stuff for outdoors then.

I have bought my 5 yr old DS the playmobile Egyptian pyramid, some dinosaurs, some usborne books and the club penguin game for the wii. He got the lego police station for his birthday and he loves it.

Cash. I know that sounds superficial and lazy, but I have given up trying to buy stuff he'll like (he is too fussy.... like me). Had a complete failure trying to get him things he'd like last birthday.

If I asked right now, He'd say Star Wars Lego. If I took him a shop he'd choose family sets of pink and purple YooHoos. In his stocking I might put something like a Clone Wars magazine.

ninjanurse .. I love that pyramid .. I would soooo buy that for him and he would probably play with it for a while but it would really be for me!! His friend has it and he hasn't shown too much interest though unfortunately!

ninjanurse glad your DS loves the Police Headquarters. My DS is currently asking for everything he sees advertised but this is the only thing he seemed excited about.

we're getting DS a stereo to replace the baby cd player in his room, as he's taken to wanting the radio on at bedtime (we're a musical/music loving family)...other than that i'm not sure. I saw a Mayan chocolate making kit which i think he'll love.

Big hits from his birthday this year were this which he couldn't wait to get on with an has asked for another one now he's done it all. Connect 4 which he is still learning to play 'properly' but will spend ages just filling it up and emptying it again.

Our 6 yr old is getting a bmx and he will be ridiculously excited about it . I am however not looking forward to having to go to the park on christmas day with it .

His bday is at the start of Dec so I normally buy stuff then divide it between the dates, so some of this might actually end up for bday not xmas-

A go cart (a joint present for both ds's as they're not cheap but we obviously are ;))

A rope swing to go in the tree in the garden (again a joint present)

Prob some playmobil- but agree with others who know that it's really for the mums & dads- I love playmobil and if I was a kid again I wouldn't want to play with anything else I don't think

Bike- he's outgrown the one father xmas bought him last year

Club penguin things- now to include the wii game that ninjanurse mentions (brilliant! Not seen it before, thank you!)

Hungry hippos

PJs

Stockingy stuff (club penguin cards, hot wheels car, wellie boot socks, chocolate coins, satsuma, nuts, shiny pennies etc etc!

Oh I love Christmas I get so sentimental and excited about doing their stockings and presents from Father Christmas especially- bring on December!

I have noticed a bit of a Club Penguin theme ... is it any good? Ds will be 6 at end of February .. is it worth introducing him to it or will I regret it? I saw a set of Club Penguin books on the book people web site the other day that looked good.

Ds2 is 5 and he is getting some of the Tomica Hypercity. It all clips together and he will just have some of the car/roads/garages and not the train bits. If he loves it he can add to it for his next birthday.
