Excellent foof and child frendly. Puppet theatre (which was still under construction) looked great, as did the wooden lodge thingy's.

"We stayed in an eco-lodge at Upfront in the North…"
We stayed in an eco-lodge at Upfront in the North Lake District in Summer 2011 and it was fantastic - not many holiday properties I'd consider worth reviewing - but this is certainly somewhere I have been recommending to my friends , especially those with kids.
Situated in the grounds of an art gallery (Upfront gallery) which also has a vegetarian restaurant/cafe serving delicious, homemade food (even a non-veg would easily be happy), a gorgeous gift shop (jewellry, bags, kids stuff, cards and art!). AND on top of that it has a children's puppet theatre.
The couple that run it are really nice. Apparently he was a stage designer - so the puppet theatre part is very well done and professional (proper stage, dimming lights, music, stage effects etc) - we saw Hansel and Gretel - which was really lovely. Our 3yo DS told the entire theatre that the witch was a "very naughty witch" in full volume mid-performance!
Accommodation - eco-lodge was brilliant. I guess because the owners have artistic flair the decor, design and furnishings are all very tasteful and modern. Very clean. Lovely natural light throughout the house. Couldn't fault it at all. 3 beds - 2 twins, and 1 double. Own outdoor decking overlooking sheep field. And little garden area...private but not completely enclosed so did have to watch my 3yo (although garden opens onto rest of site, so not too big a problem).
They were building another eco-lodge next door - which could be great if you were thinking of going with two families. Not sure how they were going to lay it out though.
Nearby...North Lakes - what can you say? Beautifully picturesque. Can take a while to get to places along windy roads but Sat nav usually gave us an accurate prediction of time.
- Beatrix Potter World
- Pencil museum (!) at Keswick
- Keswick itself is lovely for shopping and pootling
- Sharrow bay restaurant (no kids allowed - but lady at upfront can arrange babysitting - AND it is the place where sticky toffee pudding was invented!!!)
- Ullswater steamers
- Walks that a pre-school and school age could manage (30min of ambling really) with sheep and streams...bliss!
At Upfront they also have a few mobile caravans and you can stay in a converted barn next to the art gallery/owner's house - which looked really lovely.
And was very reasonable -Read moreLess
